Peggy was born in Chicago, IL, on August 24, 1948, the second of four children born to parents Robert and Alyce King of Kansas City, MO.
She grew up in Chicago, Elgin, IL, and Kansas City, MO, graduating from Southwest High School in Kansas City in 1966. She earned a Bachelor’s degree majoring in Psychology from the University of Missouri at Columbia in 1970. Peggy then moved to New York City, earning two masters degrees, the first majoring in Social Work at Columbia University, the second majoring in Finance at the Sterns School of Business at NYU.
Peggy relished moving beyond her Midwestern roots to embrace a life of adventure, travel, community, work, and intellectual stimulation in New York City. There, in a summer beach house she met the love, partner, and companion of her life, Gary Foote. Peggy and Gary married on April 24, 1981, beginning a rich journey together embracing the maximum that life has to offer.
Inspired by her father, Peggy was also one of the early NYC woman runners, regularly found exercising on Long Island beaches, and running in Central Park races. She maintained this commitment to fitness throughout her life.
Peggy worked as a Social Worker, and then at International Paper Company prior to joining CitiBank in 1984. She retired there as a Vice President in 2004, after 20 years of service. When Gary retired, they moved to Colorado Springs building their Top of Skyway dream house in 2005. Here they settled into a rewarding life of continued travel, connections with family and friends, and a meaningful community life. In retirement, Peggy also rekindled her joy for bridge and singing. She was a regular at the 17th Street Bridge Center, and was actively involved in Choir and other activities at Broadmoor Community Church.
Her heart can only be described as “giving”. She minimized her own struggles to engage with and give to others. In Colorado, as a Certified Financial Planner, she was an enthusiastic volunteer providing pro bono financial planning assistance to active duty military personnel. Recently she served as head of Pro Bono Services with the FPA - Financial Planning Association of Southern Colorado.
Peggy and Gary traveled widely during their working years, but in retirement Peggy raised Home Exchanging to an ‘art form’ allowing them to travel extensively both here and abroad.
Peggy will be forever cherished and deeply missed by Gary, her husband of 32 years; her parents: Robert and Alyce King; siblings: Susan Krueger, Libby Kinder, and Bill King; as well as her aunt, niece, nephews, great-niece, many cousins, other relatives, and so many dear friends who were woven into the fabric of her life.
A Memorial Service to celebrate Peggy’s life, and her inurnment, will be held in July at Broadmoor Community Church, 315 Lake Ave, Colorado Springs, CO, 80906.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Peggy’s memory to One Simple Voice, www.onesimplevoice.org, or to the Colorado Springs Youth Symphony, PO Box 7846, Colorado Springs, CO 80933.
