Nancy Sue Custis, 85, of Colorado Springs, CO and formerly of Upper Marlboro, MD, again changed her address when she left this earthly home on September 25, 2021 and moved to her heavenly home to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
She was born in Darlington, MD to the late Bill and Eula James. She graduated from Washington High School in Princess Anne, MD, and attended Eastern Baptist College in St. Davids, PA, State Teacher’s College in Salisbury, MD, and graduated from Charis Bible College in Colorado Springs, CO at the age of 70.
In 1952, she was crowned Farm Queen in the Somerset County Farm Bureau beauty pageant. She was married to Irving W Custis, Jr. in 1955 and they had three daughters. She had several home businesses including Tupperware, Queensway Fashions, Avon, and was a Mary Kay Cosmetics Beauty Consultant for more than 40 years. She also was a substitute teacher for many years in the Prince George's County school system in Maryland. Additionally, she taught volleyball through the PG County Adult Education Program. Following her divorce in 1980, she went to work for the Department of the Navy. In 1992, she moved to Colorado, made many new friends and served as a Delegate for the Republican Party.
Nancy Sue was given the gift of music and shared her talents throughout her life. She served as a church organist at age 13, was glee club leader in high school, sang in the National Christian Choir, played the organ for numerous weddings, and gave many piano lessons to her children, grandchildren, as well as many others, up until the time of her death. Her favorite hymn was “Jesus Loves Me” and felt blessed when she realized she could play it in every key!
She was a mighty prayer warrior and had several prayer partners throughout the years – praying weekly with some and daily with others on the phone. She lived the hymn “Sweet Hour of Prayer”- taking everything to God in prayer.
Nancy Sue enjoyed being with friends and family and kept up with many on the phone and by computer. However, she enjoyed face to face visits the best. She enjoyed her grandchildren and sang their praises to anyone who expressed interest. Not only did she teach most of her grandchildren to play the piano, she helped with Bible memorization and taught them to take their cares to the Lord, and assured them she was praying for them daily.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her former husband. She leaves behind her brother, William T James III of Ladson, SC (Peggy), three daughters: Chaille C Doherty (David) of Elizabeth, CO, Tory C Widdowson (Neal) of Salisbury, MD and Heather C Stone (Tim) of Colorado Springs, CO; nine grandchildren: Jarrod Doherty (Kaitlin), Erin Serr (Andrew), Dallas Doherty, Julia Kelly, Neal Whitfield Widdowson (Julia), Isaac Stone, Rachael Stone, Asher Stone, and Levi Stone; three great- grandchildren: Kaydence Kelly, Sean Kelly, and Melody Serr.
