Mary was born January 4th, 1925 in Burk Burnett, Texas to James and Irene McCarty. She moved to Manitou Springs in 1928. While growing up, Mary sang in a trio that entertained troops during WWII. One memorable night she sang solo with Bing Crosby at the Broadmoor Hotel. Mary graduated from Manitou High School and attended Colorado College where she met her husband, Thomas W. Ross. They were happily married for 56 years before his death in 2005. Mary worked in the library at the Salzburg Seminar in American Studies during the family’s sojourn from 1956-58. Mary also worked in the art department at Colorado College and later became one of the founders of the Bank at Broadmoor and the Broadmoor Agency. Mary was a member of PEO and Stitch and Bitch.
Our beloved Mary enjoyed singing, dancing, crossword puzzles, card games, wine, reading, and socializing with friends and family. She had a sense of humor that entertained everyone and she imparted grace and gentleness to all who met her.
She is survived by her brother, John McCarty, of Manitou Springs, her two children, Thomas Ross of Schenectady, NY and Margaret (Maggie) Ross Couper of Colorado Springs as well as three granddaughters, Emily Couper Holmes, Madeline Couper Miller and Emeralda Ross.
Memorial services will be held Sunday, August 7th at 1:00 p.m. at Shove Chapel on the Colorado College campus. A reception will be held following services.
