She was born in Brookings, SD on August 23, 1936, the second child of Carroll Lorraine Brannen and Madeline Margaret Ehleringer.
Joan was an alumni of Saint Mary’s High School and a devout Catholic of Saint Mary’s Cathedral.
She retired from the Colorado Springs Utilities in 1967 where she was Executive Administrative Secretary to the Utilities Director. She was married on October 2, 1965 to the late John M. Frederick. They were married for 42 years before his passing in 2007.
Since then Joan has been a community volunteer of many organizations, but she especially cherished serving on the board of the Colorado Springs Child Nursery Centers, Inc. and archived their historic records. She also served 13 years on the Colorado Springs Historic Preservation Board.
She is a supporting member of the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center, the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo, the Colorado Springs Philharmonic, and other local non-profits.
Joan has traveled the world extensively and she liked to read, quilt, garden, and was an avid photographer.
She is survived by her daughter, Stephanie Joan (James) Croaning and two adored grandchildren, Matthew Phillips and Morgan Kathryn Croaning; a sister, Lavonne (Wade) Causey and many cousins and nieces.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00AM, Monday, April 3, 2023 at Saint Mary’s Cathedral, 22 W Kiowa St, Colorado Springs, CO 80903.
A Committal Service is to follow at Pikes Peak National Cemetery at 12:00PM, 10545 Drennan Rd, Colorado Springs, CO 80925.
