Karen A. Benson, 79, departed this world peacefully on August, 19, 2023, following a brief battle with cancer. Karen was born in Hillsboro, WI on August, 12, 1944, and was the third of five daughters born to the late Oscar and Mary Bruce.
Karen graduated from Hillsboro High School in 1962 and shortly after worked at St. Mary’s Hospital in Madison, WI as a dietary aid in the pediatric department. Karen thereafter devoted herself to raising her three children and, in later years, worked at Kids Kampus in Cedar Rapids, IA where she found great joy in nurturing little ones. In addition to being a devoted mother and grandmother, Karen enjoyed camping, word search puzzles, and finding serenity in the mountains.
Karen is survived by her sons Kevin (Anna) Benson, Brian (Hillary) Benson, son-in-law, Norman Sooy, and grandchildren Erika, Tori, Isaac and Aaron, and Leah. Following the death of her daughter, Heidi Sooy, in 2011, Karen embodied the definition of motherhood, devoting her time and energy to helping raise Heidi’s girls into the young women they are today. Despite the loss of her own daughter, Karen is also survived by Sheri White, whom Karen considered a devoted friend and de facto daughter. Karen is further survived by three sisters, and many nephews and nieces.
A celebration of Karen’s life is set for Saturday, August 26, 2023, at 11:00 AM at Mountain View Mortuary in Colorado Springs. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to the American Cancer Society (www.cancer.org) or Pikes Peak Hospice & Palliative Care (https://pikespeakhospice.org).
