Jean Walker

January 15, 1916 – May 12, 2012

Jean Walker was born in Rochester, Minnesota on January 15, 1916 to Adelaide

Wentworth Domke and J. Edward Domke. Growing up in Rochester, Jean was gifted with

athletic ability and artistic talent. After finishing school, she became a medical-legal

secretary at the Mayo Clinic. During Word War II, she was married to Waldemar Curtis

Rasmussen on September 12, 1942 at Grace Episcopal Chapel in Colorado Springs. The

service was attended by the entire Mayo Clinic medical unit stationed at Fort Carson.

Wally's military career included Camp Crowder, Mo, Staten Island, N.Y., and Boston Ma.

At Staten Island, Wally was in charge of a 350 bed Neurological unit at Halloran General.

After his discharge in 1946, Jean and Wally returned to Rochester where he continued as a

staff member at the Mayo Clinic for the next ten years. Accepting an offer from the

Colorado Springs Medical Center, Jean and Wally moved to Colorado Springs in October,

1956 with their two sons John and Robert. Wally died in a car accident in June, 1958.

Jean was active in many types of community affairs. She was a figure and dance

skating judge with the Broadmoor Figure Skating Club and practice ice chairman for the

Worlds and Nationals held at the Broadmoor World Arena. She became an official with the

Rocky Mt. Jr. Ski Association when her two sons became classified junior ski racers. As a

charter member of the Broadmoor Community Church, Jean was active in the Womens

Fellowship and a board member of the Arts Council. As a member of the Broadmoor Golf

Club, she was a three time president of the Womens Golf Committee, board member of the

Colorado Womens Golf Association, and long time Publicity Chairman of the Invitational

Golf Tournament.

Jean married Dr. Rodney C. Walker on January 17, 1965 at the Broadmoor

Community Church. She was a charter member of the Cheyenne Mt. Zoo Auxiliary and

their second president. Jean and Rod were active members of the Colorado Springs Rose

Society, exhibiting their roses in the annual Rose Show.

In 1975 Jean became a professional watercolor artist, exhibiting her paintings in

juried shows and art galleries. She was a member of the Fine Arts Center, Colorado

Springs Art Guild, and the National League of American Pen Women. She was well known

for her wild animal paintings and landscapes. In later years she was an avid bridge payer

with several local groups.

Jean's parents and her only sister Mrs. Walter Furlow preceded her in death. She is

survived by her sons, John of Colorado Springs, and Robert of Jensen Beach, Florida, and

by her granddaughter Chelsea. She is also survived by her niece Mary E. Furlow and by

two step-children, Sandy Walker Ecton of Ft. Collins and Tom Walker of Steamboat

Springs.

A memorial service will be held 1:00 PM Saturday May 19, 2012 at the Broadmoor

Community Church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Cheyenne Mt. Zoo

building fund or to the Broadmoor Community Church.
