Doris Jean Smith, 85, passed away on Saturday, August 14, 2010, in Colorado Springs. She was born August 28, 1924 in Philadelphia, PA, to Walter J. Gray and Anna V. (Meyers) Gray. She grew up in Sault Saint Marie, Ontario, Canada and attended Sault Collegiate Institute and Sault Technical School. She was employed as a real estate salesperson, assistant bank officer (9 yrs.), and IDS financial services office manager (18 yrs.)
Doris married John L. O’Neal on February 22, 1943, in Sault Saint Marie Ontario. They had six children and lived in Kansas, Texas and Colorado.
While raising her children, Doris was active in a Junior Study club, Girl Scout leadership, and vacation Bible school. She attended First United Methodist church in Colorado Springs, serving on several committees; president, Odds and Ends Sunday school class; Parish Care ministry through homebound and hospital visitation; development of the Respite Care Ministry and Caregiver Support group. She was the administrative secretary for the Capitol Funding Campaign, also planning and organizing many Prime Timer group trips to Santa Fe, Utah, and Estes Park.
Doris is survived by sons, Robert J. (Liz) O’Neal, Sr.; Stephen E. (Betty) O’Neal; James A. O’Neal; daughters, Patricia K. (Joe) Wampler and Joan E. (Gregg) Paulson, eleven grandchildren and fifteen great grandchildren. Daughter Peggy A. Smith preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by three husbands, John L. O'Neal, Alfred "Bud" Unrein and George E. Smith.
Doris loved the outdoors, hiking, walking, reading, playing bridge, music, from popular to opera, and being with friends. Her primary source of pleasure was being with her family.
A memorial service will be held Thursday, August 19, 2010 at 11:00 a.m., at the First United Methodist Churc, 420 N. Nevada Avenue, Colorado Springs.
