After a 16 year battle with Alzheimer’s disease, Donald A. Boydstun, age 74, died at Namaste’ Alzheimer’s Center, Colorado Springs, Colorado surrounded by his loving family.
A Memorial Service will be held at 2pm on Monday, June 12, at Vista Grande Baptist Church, 5680 Stetson Hills Blvd., Colorado Springs, Colorado, with a reception following.
He was born December 10, 1942 to Lorene and Alton R. Boydstun in Ponca City, Oklahoma. He grew up in Ponca City and attended Ponca City High School graduating in 1960. He was a member of his loved First Baptist Church of Ponca City. He attended Oklahoma State University and Northern Oklahoma College. He moved to Utah helping to build the Alta Ski Resort as well as employed as an auditor for the Singer Corporation in the Western States.
He served in the Army Reserves and went on to Western Bearing Corporation in Salt Lake City, Utah where he met his wife, Diane, and they married September 27, 1969. In that same year, he was asked to take a struggling power transmission store in Reno, Nevada, building the business to its full potential. In 1971 he designed the “guts” of the world’s largest slot machine for the Nugget Hotel and Casino in Sparks, NV.
During those wonderful years in Nevada his two children, Gena and Perry were born. In 1976 a move to Denver, Colorado for another bearing concern and only one year later to open his own shop in Colorado Springs, the Colorado Bearing Corporation.
Finding a Purchasing/Buyer opportunity at Joy Manufacturing and later at Schlage Lock Corporation /Ingersoll Rand, it would be his final position and retirement recognition after 24 years of service. Alzheimer’s would now be a part of his life.
Don was a member of the EAA (Experimental Aircraft Association) where he loved to serve at any capacity, Southern Colorado Purchasing Association (where he served in many positions) Sertoma, Toastmasters, Black Rose Acoustic Society, where he often played his guitar and sang to a crowd. Don enjoyed skiing, music of all kinds, camping, hiking, gardening, and his greatest pastime, airplanes. He was a member of Pulpit Rock Church for many years serving the Lord faithfully.
Don never knew a stranger and reflected Gods love to all those he came in contact with. If Don could give you a gift it would be music, he sang to the end and is no doubt singing in heaven! Survivors are his wife, Diane, daughter Gena Rene Boydstun-Smith, son Perry Alan Boydstun (Shannon) His precious grandchildren, Elizabeth Jane Smith, Clayton Alan Smith, Luna June Boydston, Presten Alan Boydstun and Piercen Reece Boydstun. His siblings are Mike Boydstun (Barbara) OK City, OK, James R Boydstun (Maria) FL and Sue Witteman (Glen) Ponca City, OK. There are 7 nieces and nephews and many dear cousins.
Memorial contributions can be made to his first church in Colorado Springs, Vista Grande Baptist Church in his name, Don Boydstun, if desired.
