Daniel Oracio Mestas passed on to the other side of eternity on January 30, 2024. He was the beloved husband of his beautiful wife of 64 years, Mary Jane Mestas, cherished and devoted father to his four children Daniel O. Mestas, Jr., Theresa A. Jozefkowicz (Jacek Jozefkowicz), Carla M. Mestas, (Mark Duey), Joseph “Joey” Mestas and their families that include his adoring grandchildren; Tyson Marian, (Josie), Jason, Stefanie and Stefan Jozefkowicz, (Stefan Daniel preceded him in death), Connor M., Marisa Lucia and Jacob D. Mestas Duey, Daniel G. Mestas, Justus J. Mestas, Savanah Arceneaux and Sierra Johansen, along with several great-grandchildren. He also leaves behind numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Daniel was born on July 14th, 1930 in Manassa, Colorado to Daniel Mestas and Lucy Archuleta Mestas of New Mexico. He was the eldest of seven, surviving his parents, three brothers Francisco Everlie, Jose Enrique, and Jose Solome “Joey” Mestas, and three sisters Maria Helena Gonzalez, Thelma Jeanne Shaheen and Veneranda Loyala “Betty” Morin. He was raised with the values of a “farm boy” that included a strong commitment to family, faith and land. He was a proud and distinguished Army veteran of the Korean War serving with the 1st Cavalry Division where he was a decorated and courageous Corporal who was awarded several medals including three Bronze Service Stars. While he seldom spoke of his time in active duty, he often shared that boot camp was a breeze compared to working the fields in the San Luis Valley and throughout the many villages of Southern Colorado and Northern New Mexico.
After his time in the Army, he settled in Colorado Springs where he and Mary Jane raised their children, grandchildren and enjoyed life to the fullest. He had a remarkable memory and was a man of honor and integrity, just like his presence he had a strong grounding grip for a handshake while at the same time he possessed an amazingly generous and caring heart. Daniel worked hard in several professions his entire life, including 34 years at Fort Carson in Civil Service, managing the Munitions Depot. While in that position he never missed a day of work speaking to his strong work ethic. After retiring, he was quickly hired to drive a school bus for the Colorado Springs School District 11 which he did so for 17 years where he was fondly known as “Mr. Dan.” Enjoying a second retirement from D-11 at the spry age of 82.
Often described as “a cool guy”, he was also a steward of his community volunteering for Goodwill Industries. He was a proud member and generous supporter of several organizations including the VFW, DAV, NARFE, BPOE and USBC. Daniel was an avid bowler for over 50 years and up until late 2023 participated in two Senior Leagues and, at the age of 93, carried a 130 average. He had many close friends throughout his lifetime and was considered a true friend and confidant.
Daniel enjoyed adventure and was a world traveler - he was sent to the Far East in the service of his country and later, with his travel buddy, Mary Jane, traveled across Europe, Canada, and Mexico. Their love story and marriage is an inspiration to many. In addition, countless road trips with his family to the mountains of Colorado and sentimental journeys retracing his traditions and roots of the San Luis Valley and Northern New Mexico were an annual highlight. He loved making people laugh and his favorite pastime was spending time with his family making fun, lasting and beautiful “memorias”.
His amazing smile could light up any room and naturally, many hearts. Daniel loved life fiercely and believed every new day was a precious gift. He loved his family deeply and was proud of all his children and grandchildren. Daniel earned many accolades and titles in his life but the most cherished label he wore was “Pampo” as he was called by his loving grandchildren. His stories were legendary and were guaranteed to “make your hair stand on end.”
Daniel, the man, husband, father, “Poppy”, grandfather and Pampo will be forever missed yet his great love, wisdom, and memorable life mottos will continue to guide us and all who knew and loved him.
