Carolyn Nicholson was born July 31, 1937 in Driver, Arkansas to Howell and Carolyn Nicholson. She graduated from Wilson (Arkansas) High School, where she played on the women’s basketball team. After high school, she studied at the Mississippi State College for Women (Mississippi University for Women), and eventually achieved her Master’s degree in physical education at Springfield College (Massachusetts). She worked as a horseback riding and physical education teacher in Sweet Briar, Virginia. In 1967, Carolyn moved to Colorado Springs, where she continued teaching physical education classes.
In Colorado Springs, Carolyn worked as a tutor and substitute teacher when she was no longer physically able to teach P.E. She continued to enjoy taking classes and staying as physically active as possible. Carolyn was a voracious reader and frequented the Colorado Springs Public Library. She loved learning new things and keeping up with current events, and she prided herself on being an independent, critical thinker.
She is survived by her brothers Howell and Bill. Memorials can be made to the Rheumatology Research Foundation (www.rheumresearch.org) or charity of choice.
Carolyn will be remembered as a loving sister, aunt, and friend; she enjoyed animals and people; and as someone who loved to be physically active and to laugh.
