Barbara Lopez passed away peacefully on November 11, 2013 and was surrounded by her family after a hard fought battle with breast cancer. She was born in Torrance, California but lived more than half of her life in Colorado Springs. Barb was married to Sonny Lopez for 34 years; together they raised three children. Her family was her passion and for her family, she was their strength and inspiration.
Barb dedicated over 20 years to School District 11 in the Payroll Department. She built many lasting friendships throughout her career and was highly respected by her employees and colleagues. Her commitment to community and education was evident in her career, as well as her inaugural membership within the Wasson High School Alumni Association. Barb was known as “Mom” or “Mama Lopez” to many of her children’s friends who she considered family. When her grandchildren were born, they became her biggest joy. She was known for loving and spoiling all seven of them. She will be deeply and forever missed by all.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Sonny Lopez; father, Donald Baker; and in-laws: Mary & Harry Herman and Al Lopez.
Barbara is survived by her children: Kari (Jason) Kemp, Nick (Shannon) Lopez and Jessie (Jesika) Lopez; Grandchildren: Leilani, Kamea, Bailee, John, Kaila, Sonny and Ava; Mother, Harriet Baker; Sisters: Betsy (Dave) Stempson, Kathy (Mike) Larrison; Brother: Dave Baker; Brother and sister-in-laws: Monica (Lynn) Pigg; Irene Padilla-Lopez; Mike (Carol) Lopez; Harry (Bernadette) Herman; Dan (Lora) Herman, as well as hundreds of friends and extended family members.
A funeral mass to celebrate Barbara’s life will be held in Colorado Springs on Saturday, November 16, 1:30pm, at Divine Redeemer, 927 North Logan Ave. A reception will follow at Tesla Educational Opportunity Center, 2560 International Circle.
