Barbara passed away peacefully at Brookdale Briargate in Colorado Springs on February 11, 2023 at the age of 70. Raised in a small New England community, Barbara developed a strong work ethic. She entered the adult work force as a Department of the Air Force civilian secretary. Over the next 9 years she served at air-bases in Massachusetts, Alabama, and Colorado before joining the MITRE Corporation in Colorado Springs where she served for 29 years.
Athleticism was a significant part of her life. She enjoyed recreational skiing in all the challenging ski areas of the northeastern and western United States. She excelled at firearms marksmanship. She was an avid fan of ladies fastpitch softball. She walked up to ten miles a day just to stay in shape.
An ardent wilderness hiker, Barbara saw the hand of God in every beautiful mountain vista.
Showing love to animals was paramount. Neighborhood dogs knew and loved her. They strained at their leashes when they saw her, anxious to get their daily belly-rub. Wild animals seemed to know that Barbara held them in esteem. Mule-deer bucks bedded down outside her window daily as though they were setting up protective guard-duty. Does brought their fawns seemingly to hear her voice of praise.
Beyond a strong work ethic and love of being outside and with animals, her true love was family. If you were lucky enough to have shared a laugh, a smile, or a hug, you were the luckiest person in the world.
Survivors include daughter, Kristin; husband, Ben; sister, Mona Louise; and brother, Robbie. She was preceded in death by her sister, Carole; and her parents, Stan and Mona.
A Remembrance Gathering for Barbara will be held Thursday, March 9, 2023 from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM at Swan-Law Funeral Directors, 501 North Cascade Avenue, Colorado Springs, CO 80903. Appetizers and beverages will be provided, and all are welcome to attend.
