On the early morning hours of Sunday, May 23, 2021, our dad, Sammy Contreras, peacefully passed away with our mom, Lupe, by his side. His children and grandchildren were by his side as he began his journey to heaven. Our dad had just turned 73 on May 11, whose birthday he shared with his wife (our Mom) of 51 years.
Dad, whose resounding faith in God allowed him to love strongly and forgive often, had a deep sense of community, a strong work ethic, and a true love of golf. He served on the Colorado City Council for 29 years, including 15 years as Mayor Pro Tem. His commitment to the City was second to none. He not only dedicated his time in working alongside his Council colleagues, he also worked alone at times to clean up the town. Oftentimes, he would load his little white truck with a rake or a shovel to clean a lot or two. Dad loved the City of Colorado City. This was also an example of Dad’s strong work ethic. He worked for Root Valley Fair Lodge (later named Valley Fair Lodge) for 42 years. He served the employees and the residents of the nursing home as if they were members of his own family. He was never one to sit around and relax. Instead, he enjoyed working on his house and in his yard. It was no surprise to see Dad mowing the yard in 100 degree weather. As long as he had his half gallon tub of butter pecan ice cream or some ice pops (popsicles), he was good to go with a smile on his face.
Dad enjoyed playing golf. He made quite a few friends on the golf course. However, playing golf with his sons or his brother, Kinin, were his favorite tee times. As long as Dad had his golf clubs and his golf cart, he could play a round of 18 holes with anyone.
Dad was committed to his faith and trust in God. Through his missionary work and ministry of over 25 years, Dad led many people to the feet of Christ not only in Colorado City but throughout the country. Dad traveled often to different states to share his testimony and teach the word of God. As he led the congregation of Iglesias Emanuel, he taught how to love, how to forgive, and how to remain faithful to God. It is through this faith that we know Christ was ready to take Dad by the hand and welcome him home.
Dad was reunited in Heaven with his dad, Narciso Contreras Sr, his brother, Narciso (Kinin) Contreras Jr., and his grandparents, Alejandro and Consuelo Rocha.
Dad is and will continue to be loved, cherished, and remembered by Mom and his children - Santos Jr (Melissa), Michael (Kevin), Mark, and Kristie (Eric). He will always be known as “Grandpa” by his grandchildren - Timothy Contreras, Jeramiah and Saedye Moreno, Elizabeth Haubrick, and Anthony Contreras.
His brothers, sisters, nieces, and nephews should remember Dad as someone who thought of them often. He accepted and loved them without fail. Family was everything to Dad.
A visitation will be held for Dad on Wednesday, May 26 from 6:00 - 8:00 PM at Kiker-Seale Funeral Home. His services will be held at First Baptist Church on Thursday, May 27 at 10:00 AM. His final resting place will follow in the Colorado City Cemetery. Fellowship will follow at the Colorado City Civic Center.
