John was born on July 31st, 1931 in Colorado City, Texas, the eighth of nine children born to the late Ernest and Maggie Mae Bailey Brown. He grew up with his parents and siblings on the family farm in the Buford Community. He married Margaret Barr on February 24th, 1951 and was a life-long resident of Colorado City.
He was man of strong faith and character and he loved God and his family with all of his heart. When he gave you his word, he kept it. He had great compassion and generosity for others. A man of few words, the life he lived and the example he set spoke volumes. He had a quick wit and never missed an opportunity to make people laugh and brighten their day. He was never short on smiles that lit up a room and everyone in his family knew how much he loved them just by being in his presence or hearing the lift in his voice when speaking to him. The Sunday and holiday Brown family get-togethers were cherished by him and all of those blessed to attend.
He retired from the U.S. Postal Service after 26 years as a letter carrier “rain, sleet, or snow, the mail must go” and for the City of Colorado City for 10 years as a meter reader and doing repairs. He enjoyed gardening, his pecan trees, fishing, practical jokes, eating ice cream, making people laugh, and playing with his children and later, his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was a life-long member and active in St. Luke Methodist Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by all of his siblings whom he cherished and missed, sisters; Ernestine Morgan Moore (Arlie), Jerline Felts (Jack), Doris Turner (Veltie), Ona Mae Harris (Jim), brothers; Glynn Brown (Carlene), Roy Lee Brown (Ethel), Vaughn Brown (Ann) and Billy Wayne Brown.
Those left to cherish his memory are his wife of 69 years, Margaret; daughters, Shirley Barta and husband, Ron, and Charlotte Garcia; 5 grandchildren; Jen Barta and fiancé, Tom Meaney, Ashlan Parkerson and husband, Bailey, Marcus Bradley, Krystal Arcides and fiancé Jesus Galaviz, and Brittany Davila and fiancé Damian Lujan; 7 great-grandchildren Dakota Bradley, Layla Arcides, Marcus Bradley Jr., Cayden Arcides, Raiden Davila, Alyssa Lujan, and Liam Lujan, and by a host of nieces nephews, and all his close friends, all of whom he loved dearly.
In honor of his memory, his family would like to share excerpts from two of his favorite songs from the Cokesbury Worship Hymnal as an inspiration to those of us he left behind and to honor the life he lived.
An Evening Prayer:
“If I have wounded any soul today, if I have caused one foot to go astray. If I have walked in my own willful way, Dear Lord Forgive.”
Others:
“Lord help me live from day to day in such a self-forgetful way. That even when I kneel to pray, my prayer shall be for Others. Others, Lord, yes Others, let this my motto be. Help me to live for others, that I may live like thee.”
