Joe was born September 21, 1935 to Dean and Christine Shoemaker in Colorado City, TX, graduating from Colorado City High School in 1954. Joe married Peggy Jean Jones of Abilene, TX in 1958. After completing his Bachelor’s degree at West Texas State University in 1959; Joe and Peggy moved to Pecos, TX where he began a successful 34 year career in education and raised three kids. Joe taught wood working and drafting and after obtaining a Master Degree at Sul Ross University, Alpine, TX. and became principal at Austin Elementary School from 1978-1979. Joe was a well loved and respected principal at Pecos High School from 1980 – 1992. Joe was also a long time member of the Pecos downtown Lion’s Club and served as a past President.
After retiring from education Joe traveled the state with a team of colleagues performing teacher evaluations before beginning a new career as a RIO counselor with the state prison system in Dayton, Synder, and Colorado City, TX. Joe retired officially in 2005 to spend more time with his family and two special grandchildren, Chance and Linzey Neff of San Angelo, Texas. Joe enjoyed spending time at the lake, boating, eating good fried shrimp, traveling to New Mexico, and watching Chance and Linzey play sports and show their award winning lambs. Joe also enjoyed spending time with his grand dogs.
Joe is survived by his beloved wife Peggy Jean Shoemaker of Colorado City, TX; son Rodney Jay Shoemaker of Houston, TX, daughter and son-in-law Angela and Joel Alexander; daughter and son-in-law Connie and Todd Neff; two grandchildren Chance and Linzey Neff; sister and brother-in-law Mary Nell and Wayne Claxton of Colorado, City, sister-in-law Joyce Shoemaker of Colorado City, step brother and sister in-law Joe and Mary Beth Morren of Colorado City; step sister and brother in-law Pat and Ernest Walker of Mart, TX, several nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends and former students. Joe will be greatly missed by all.
Graveside services have been arranged for 11:00 AM. Monday July 2, 2012 under the direction of Kiker-Seale Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to your favorite charity, the American Cancer Society, Scott and White Hospital Foundation http://www.sw.org/sites/development/, or the Mitchell County Hospital Auxillary in Colorado, City, TX. Visitation will be from 6:30 until 8:00 on Sunday at Kiker-Seale Funeral Home.
