Funeral services remembering her life will be held on Tuesday, July 9, 2024 at 10:00 AM in the chapel of Kiker-Seale Funeral Home with her sister, Rev. Carolyn Bean officiating. Interment will follow in Lone Wolf Cemetery where she will be laid to rest next to her three sons.
Doris was born on October 15, 1938 in Loraine, Texas to the late Eldon Leon Chitsey and Ida Mae (Prescott) Chitsey. She was raised at the beloved family home place with her siblings. It was during this time they created special memories that never left their hearts. She attended school in Hermleigh where she graduated in 1957. She married Julian “Bob” Layfield of Coahoma in 1957 and together they had 6 children. Doris devoted herself to caring for her husband and children. After her children were older she went into the workforce and worked for several companies, however she was an outstanding waitress. In the early 80’s she became active with AA. She served as a sponsor for many years. She later married Ray Jordan and they enjoyed many years together until his passing. She enjoyed sewing in her younger years and made clothes for her children. Doris was strong-willed, reserved and had the spirit of a true overcomer. She was resourceful and did what she could to help others. She was also a caregiver for her three sons before their passing.
She is preceded in death by parents; husband, Ray Jordan; three sons, Bobby Jack Layfield, Loren Scott Layfield and William Terry Layfield; her brother, Doug Chitsey; grandson, Clinton Roe Isbell and great-granddaughter, Jersey Kwinn Gonzales.
She is survived by her daughters, Brenda Sue Matlock of Hot Springs, AR, Melissa Jo Walker of Colorado City and Tammy Renee Cox of Lubbock; 11 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren; her siblings, Iva Jo Henry of Snyder, Jerry Dale Chitsey of Wall and Carolyn Sue Beane of Hot Springs, AR; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
