After battling cancer for eight years with his signature strength and grace, Johnny Ho passed away at Seton Medical Center, Daly City, on November 27, 2020. Born in China in 1933, he was the only son of Eddie Ho. He graduated from university with a degree in accounting before immigrating to the United States where his movie-star looks and chivalry caught the eye of Amy Tin Tseng Chan. The two were wed in 1968 and had three children. In 1975, the family moved to South City, where Johnny worked for United Airlines. He was active in the Tung Hwa Benevolent Association, serving not only as treasurer and vice president but also as designated driver for the elderly mahjong players.
This concern and care for others shaped the way he lived his life, working the swing shift so he could drop off/pick up his children, shop for groceries, and look in on his parents and in-laws. When he left for work every afternoon at 2:30 p.m., his ritual was to shake each child’s hand before he cheerfully zipped off in his Toyota Corolla. And when he came home at 11:15, if they were still up, they ran to greet him. On weekends, he packed the family and his in-laws into his Buick and drove everyone to lunch, errands, and mahjong parties. Naturally athletic, he played soccer in his youth but effortlessly picked up ping pong and bowling whenever his children begged him to join in. He taught them to pay their bills on time, keep the gas tank full, and be generous with others. But he also showed them with his quick wit and eagerness to play games how to be a good friend. At eighty-seven, he was a model of fierce independence, still driving to the newspaper dispenser, grocery store, and doctor’s appointments.
He is survived by his beloved wife of fifty years, Amy; their three children, Lily, Sophia, and David; two sons-in-law, Ken and Allen; and three grandchildren, Chloe, Phoebe, and Justin.
