Mary Kathryn (Kay) McBroom White was born on December 7, 1923, in Leonard, Texas. Her parents were Claude and Fay McBroom. Kay had two younger sisters, Jean and Barbara. As a child, Kay picked cotton to pay for material so her grandmother could sew her school clothes. Kay’s grandmother taught her how to sew creative dresses. Kay excelled in school and attended Leonard High School. She graduated the 3rd top academic student in her class in 1941.
She met the love of her life, Lloyd Randall White, after he had joined the Navy. He called Kay and proposed marriage before he was deployed overseas. She said “Yes!” Lloyd served in in the United States Navy Sea Bees and was stationed in the Aleutians Islands. While in the military, Kay and Lloyd wrote love letters to each other every day. Lloyd was in the Navy from January 9, 1943, through November 15, 1945. During that time, Kay was employed by Russell Stover’s Candy. She traveled and helped open new Russell Stover’s Candy stores in Seattle and New Orleans.
When Lloyd returned from service, they were married on December 29, 1945, at First Baptist Church in Weatherford, Texas. Their pride and joy were their three children, Sharron, Marilyn, and Randy White. They lived in Fort Worth, Dallas, Haltom City, and Watauga.
Kay was active and creative. She designed creative patterns and sewed beautiful one-of-a kind dresses for her daughters while they were young. Kay created formals for Sharron and Marilyn when they entered and won many beauty contests. In addition, she designed and sewed all of the bride-maid dresses for Sharron’s and Marilyn’s weddings. Kay owned her own Antique & Furniture Store and was also a licensed Beautician. She was a great cook and enjoyed hosting family get-togethers. Kay enjoyed her rose garden. She was an avid Dallas Cowboy Fan and followed the team each year. Kay loved being “Mimi” to her grand-children and great-grandchildren and to her great-great-grandchild.
Kay’s husband, Lloyd, had health issues due to Parkinson’s disease and could no longer work. So, she worked at Foley’s to have health insurance for them. She was awarded numerous honors for leadership and as top employee in sales. When Lloyd entered a nursing home, Kay visited him two or three times daily. After 50 years of marriage, Kay’s husband, Lloyd passed away on January 10, 1996. Kay enjoyed Bible Studies led by her son, Randy, at her home with her grandson Bryant who lived with her. Kay’s faith in God grew during that time. She was confident of her relationship with Jesus Christ.
