He began his life journey when he was born in Bryan to Cornelia Mae and Clarence Newton Wyatt on May 26, 1930 where he lived his entire life with the exception of his military service. He attended SFA high school and Allen Academy and then joined the armed forces in 1948. He was wounded in war in 1950 and returned home a war hero receiving the prestigious Silver Star and Purple Heart for his service in the Korean War. He was then employed as a switchman for Santé Fe Railroad after the service until 1957.
He met Dolores Houston in 1953. They married in 1956 in Somerville and moved to start their home in Bryan on Woody Lane. They welcomed their first children in September of 1957; they were identical twins, Jennifer and Janet. Their youngest, Suzanne was born into the family in 1963. In 1958, He started his own business, Ted Wyatt Concrete Contracting which served the community with helping construct much of the curb and gutter in the area. He was also involved in the construction of Texas World Speedway and Viking Stadium. He continued this business until he retired in 1993.
In 1972 Mr. Wyatt and his wife bought Ed Garner’s Sporting Goods Store on University Dr. and changed the name to Wyatt’s Sporting Goods, which they expanded into three stores. Through this business, he enjoyed being a part of the sports community through providing sporting goods to local athletes, of all ages, and got to know many of them personally. His love for sports also took him into the college world of sports at Texas A&M where he served that community by helping with statistical records in basketball and football for many years. As well as a love for team sports, Ted loved to fish. This was a lifelong hobby that turned professional in 1980. Mr. Wyatt fished the professional BASS circuit from 1980 – 1993 with winnings in numerous tournaments.
Mr. Wyatt served as a community leader by holding several board positions which included First National Bank, Briarcrest Country Club, SOS Ministries, Renewal Ministries and Camp Creek Lake.
Mr. Wyatt was a deeply spiritual man who loved to worship and pray. He spent his retirement years volunteering for Save Our Streets Ministries, a local street ministry and Renewal Ministries, a national prayer ministry. In these activities, he touched many lives through his love, service and prayers. He knew how to make people feel special through his wide beautiful smile, his shining eyes, his heart of gold, his deep love for his family and his love and hope for those who did not know Jesus Christ. He was a great fisherman but above all, he was a fisher of men; young, old, rich, poor, all nations; he was a true fisherman for God. He fathered many who were not his physical children. He was loved by many and will be deeply missed.
He loved adventure and had many experiences that made his life full and exciting besides what is already listed. He rode bulls and participated on an army mountain training team where he trained others in snow skiing and ropes and repelling. He was in a country and western band as a bass guitar player. He loved to golf. He was a swim clown, a roller skater, and a fishing guide.
He is preceded in death by his parents; his brother Glenn Wyatt; and his sister Billie Jack Gregory.
