John Sharp Whitley, 92, of College Station, passed away December 26, 2012 at Magnified nursing home to meet his Lord and Savior. Visitation is scheduled from 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday, December 29 at Memorial Funeral Chapel in College Station. A celebration of his life will be 2 p.m. Sunday, December 30 at the funeral home. Interment will follow at Bryan City Cemetery.
John was born December 30, 1919 in Iola to Irene Cobb Whitley and John Frank Whitley.
John worked in the Civil Conservation Corps when he was young. He volunteered in the Army in September 1941 and had his training in Hawaii. He witnessed the attack of Pearl Harbor Dec 7. He spent the next four years in the South Pacific. John earned the American Defense Ribbon with Bronze Star, Asiatic Pacific Ribbon with two Bronze Stars and Philippine Liberation Ribbon with one Bronze Star. He was a member of the VFW Post 4006 in Navasota, First Baptist Church in Navasota and loved going to Sunday School, and the Adam Royder Mason Lodge in Wellborn.
He is preceded in death by his parents.
He is survived by his loving wife Ruby Willis Whitley; step children Jeff Gray and Melinda Baltrukevich; step grandchild Matthew Vaughn; sisters Polly Patranella of Bryan, Reba Taylor of Plano; and numerous nephews and nieces.
