Roosevelt Henderson was born to the late Annie Kate Cohen and Austin Henderson on October 20, 1934 in Washington, Georgia. He departed this life on Thursday, December 10, 2020 at the young age of 86 (which to him was always 21). He went peacefully in his sleep. His loving heart and handsome smile will always leave a beacon of light for everyone who crossed his path.
Roosevelt gave his life to Christ at an early age. He attended New Ford Baptist Church in Danburg, Georgia. As an young adult, he graduated from Milton's School of Tonsorial Science Atlanta, Georgia in 1954 and later married Velma Henderson on June 24, 1959.
He was a faithful and dedicated mail courier of the Atlanta Board of Education for over 24 years, but being a barber was the passion of his life. He enjoyed all of his customers throughout his lengthy career.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Annie Kate Cohen and stepfather, ET Cohen; father Austin Henderson; brother, George Henderson and his sister, Betty Hartfield. He leaves to cherish his memory his wife, Velma Henderson of Atlanta, Georgia; two daughters, Shirley (Emmett) Jiles of Atlanta, Georgia and Linda (Melvin) Starks of Huntsville, Alabama; a son, Franklin (Willa) Flowers of Opp, Alabama; a grandson, who served as a son, Corey (Erica) Jiles of Atlanta, Georgia; nine grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; four brother-in-laws, Eddie L. Gooden (Pat) of Orlando, Florida, Willie J. Gooden (Kathy) of Ridgeville, South Carolina, George Gooden Jr. (Rita) of Yalaha, Florida; and Thomas L. Gooden (Barbara) or Fort Myers, Florida; a host o f nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
We will miss his smile, jokes and raps. We will not forget to "Stay on the Sunny Side of the Street" and will forever remember his GREAT HUGS.
