Jim was born on December 1, 1948 in Battle Creek, MI to Russell C. Mercer and Marguerite Lucille (Biggs) Mercer, both preceding him in death. Jim married Nancy Jo (Robinson) on April 19, 1969 in Battle Creek, MI.
He graduated from Harper Creek High School and Western Michigan University. He taught French at Warsaw Community School and managed McDonald’s Restaurants in Coldwater and Hillsdale, both in Michigan, Kendallville and Angola, both in Indiana. Jim enjoyed bicycling, fishing, canoeing, kayaking and wood working. He had been a member of Acres Land Trust and enjoyed hiking the ‘Acres’ trails in Steuben County, Indiana.
Survivors include his wife, Nancy J. Mercer of Angola; one son, Benjamin (DeLena) Mercer of Angola; one daughter, Laura Mercer of Angola; one sister, Peg (John) Kruger of Greeley, CO; and one granddaughter.
A gathering of friends and family will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. , Wednesday, July 24, 2013 at River Bend Park, 313 W. Girard Road, Union City, MI. A Celebration of Life will follow at 11:00 a.m. with a picnic lunch provided.
