Betty was born to Robert Fulton Pratt and Annie Crook Pratt on February 25,1923 in Cuyahoga Falls, OH.
Betty married John Frank “Jack” Hausman in Kent, OH in May of 1946. After 34 years of marriage, Betty and Jack divorced. Seven years later, Betty met and married Willam Douglas Miller, a retired Dow Patent attorney, in Lake Jackson, TX.
Betty was proud of her work as a “Rosie the Riveter” on Navy planes for a year following her graduation from high school in 1942. Betty worked primarily as a homemaker. She taught young children in local pre-schools. Later she enjoyed working as a cashier for 16 years at Lake Jackson City Hall.
Betty attended Kent State University for two years where she studied art and physical therapy. She was active in her college service sorority Beta Sigma Phi. A 70 year resident of Lake Jackson, Betty served in numerous community service organizations, often in leadership roles: Beta Sigma Phi, First United Methodist Church, Girl Scouts, Pink Ladies, Art League, and The Center for Arts & Sciences. Betty was an accomplished seamstress, an acclaimed local artist in oils and watercolors, lover of performance arts (theater, opera, and symphony orchestra concerts), an avid gardener, talented cook, and devoted child caregiver. Betty travelled throughout the United States, western Caribbean, Mediterranean countries, and Great Britain.
Betty was preceded in death by her husband William Douglas Miller; parents, Robert and Annie Pratt; sisters Iris Pratt (Charlie) Frazier, Ivy Pratt Gaylan, Elsie Pratt (Tony) Jordan; brothers James (Diane) Pratt, Robert F. (Gladys) Pratt, Jr; and daughter, Susan Batson Hausman (David) Nimmo.
Betty is survived by daughters Andrea Hausman (Lonnie) Hazlitt, Betsy Hausman (John S.) Vernor; grandchildren Andrew Hazlitt, Robert (Munia) Hazlitt; Amy Batson (Greg) Lowry, Karyn Batson; LeighAnne Vernor (Anthony) Shumate, Lori Vernor (Teal) Graham, Melissa Vernor (Mark) Reid, Timothy (Cate) Vernor; great-grandchildren Cade Bennett, London Lowry, Lyric Lowry, Presley Shumate, Brooklyn Shumate, Jordan Graham, Gage Graham, Mason Reid, Marshall Reid, Max Reid, Audrey Vernor, Cora Vernor, and Beau Vernor. Betty is also survived by stepsons Kurt Miller and Terry (Jan) Miller, eighteen nieces and nephews, and Rowena Navarro, faithful primary caregiver and companion during her final year.
Betty’s Celebration of Life will be officiated by Pastor Wade Floyd on Tuesday November 21 at 11 am in the Chapel of the First United Methodist Church in Lake Jackson. The service will be followed by a light lunch reception in the Asbury Room adjacent to the Chapel.
