I knew Dr. Roy from working with him at the California Eye Institute.  My co-workers and I worked in the Diagnostic Lab and Dr. Roy would always bring us goodies - strawberry pizza from Mom's Bakery and coconut macaroons from his trips to Sedona, AZ.  I think giving these to us gave him a good excuse to enjoy them himself, but he always hung around a little and asked about our lives and told lots of stories.  We talked about God, movies, pretty darn near everything.  He was the most interesting person I think I have ever met...and such a kind/sweet man!  We all loved him.

I think about him often.  Every time I see a movie with Robert Duvall in it, I think of him.  Every time I have the above mentioned goodies, I think of him.  Every time I pass by the Eye Institute, I think of him. 

Thank you, Dr. Roy for all the great memories.  I will see you again in Heaven some day!

I’ll never forget our trip to Italy with Grandad and Nanny after our wedding. We were young 21 yr olds and we could NOT keep up with him! We chased him around everywhere we went and had to stop to take a rest and ended up falling asleep on the steps of the Vatican because we were that exhausted! (We ended up getting scolded by Italian police for “coming all the way from California to sleep on the Vatican steps”. Oops!)  Grandad was probably the only person I’ve ever met that may have liked ice cream more than I do. We were always looking for gelato shops and we’d eat it twice a day on our trip. He took us to so many incredible places and got us special access to the catacombs beneath the Vatican. He knew everything there was to know about every place we went. Such a brilliant and intelligent man. I will always remember him that way, Alzheimer’s couldn’t take that away from him. I remember one of the last times I saw him, we sat with an old photo album of his family and himself as a child and he knew who every single person was and could tell you what they were doing in each photo. Family was so important to him and he was so loving to his grandkids and great grands. His legacy will live on through them. 

About a week before dad passed, he was folding some towels for one of the caregivers. I thought “ I wonder if dad would remember how to fold the hanky mouse if I showed him one and started the steps for him. Dad suffered from Alzheimer’s so his brilliant mind was effected by this dreaded disease. But I was just so hopeful that just maybe he might find the memory of that old hanky mouse. He would make the hanky mouse for every child, grandchild and great grandchild. And if you were around dad at a restaurant or country club where they had cloth napkins... you may have been shown the hanky mouse or even got to pet his hanky mouse before it jumped out of dads hands. Well dad didn’t recall how to make that special hanky mouse... but dads mouse legacy lives on. The great grandchildren who gathered in Utah after dad passed learned to make those cute little hanky mice! They even took the liberty of naming their mice... Donald was one, Eugene was another, Roy another, Bompa another! Monday before dads service once again we gathered as the family of Donald Roy, and a memory was made as the children, grandchildren and great grandchildren wrote a special message on the hanky and then learned to turn the hanky into a mouse. On Tues 5/19/2020, each of the Ca. Family members that made a mouse, walked up to dads casket, paid their last respects and placed a hanky mouse with a personal message in the casket to reside with our loving dad/granddad... it was a marked moment for all of us! I am so thankful for the sweet memories my children and grandchildren have of their granddad and the heritage they now carry and a reminder of the white hanky mouse! Charisse

I remember my uncle Don from my childhood when he and his family would come to visit us in Kansas City during the summer. I have such fond memories of him being A loving, Caring gentleman. I have always respected him for the choices he made in his life.
