Larry Frohriep

A giant of a man in both size and spirit, Larry entered the world in March 1943, and would spend the next 80 years making his impact on it. Larry graduated from East Detroit High School in 1960, and Wayne State University in 1963. He entered the workforce at the tender age of 9, pedaling papers with pride. In his career as a funeral director, Larry brought comfort and peace to countless families on their worst days. It was a job few could do, and Larry managed it with warmth and a sense of humor, leaving behind a family well acquainted with the business of death. (We hope his own proceedings meet his very high standards).

Larry married Jacquelyn Woods in 1963, and together they raised two daughters. His frugality and financial prudence allowed them both to retire young and travel often. He filled scores of photo albums with their trips, hosting parties simply to share them and the related stories. He played cards, he adored his senior group, and he faithfully attended Hope Church for decades, serving as Treasurer for 25 years. He was a devoted member of the Fraser Lions Club, and achieved the ranks of Worshipful Master & Past Master with the Detroit Freemasons.

He always had a solid grasp and rigid adherence to rules and tradition, but he left room to be playful and silly, with a biting sarcasm for things he disagreed with. Family and friends appreciated his logical mind, deep knowledge of financial planning, and his big heart. He never arrived to an event empty-handed, and was always showering friends and family with practical gifts purchased with love (and Menards points). Larry was never afraid to voice his opinion, whether solicited or not. He was also a lifelong lover of dogs, and always had a pocket full of treats for any and all furry friends. His macaroni and cheese was nothing to shake a stick at either.

Anyone who met him heard his long, goofy, perfect stories. Most of us heard them more than once. Among his favorites: cooking lobster with his granddaughters, who named the creatures and then sociopathically felt nothing as they hit the pot; and his 50th birthday party, during which the microphone was commandeered by an extremely precocious five-year-old. Larry carried a folder full of photos of his great-grandsons which he happily shared with everyone from family to busy medical professionals to disinterested strangers. What he lacked in brevity, he made up for with genuine interest in those around him.

Larry is survived by his wife of 60 years, Jackie, his sister Luanne (Harvey), his dearest friend Bill Wienman (Barb), & his beloved daughters Margie (Jim) and Debbie (Mike). He was a doting grandfather of Jess (Tim), Rachel (Steve), Kyla, Joey, Brianna, Julia, and Luc, and obsessed great grandpa of Franklin and Henry.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests you clip coupons and patronize your local Menards. Alternatively, donations may be made to Hope United Church of Christ or Leader Dogs for the Blind. He will be deeply missed, but we take comfort in knowing he left the world on his own terms, surrounded by love.

Visitation for Larry will be held Thursday, November 16, 2023 and Friday, November 17, 2023 from 3-8 PM at Resurrection Funeral Home, 40800 Hayes Road, Clinton Township, MI 48038. An instate visitation will occur Saturday, November 18, 2023 at 10 AM until time of the funeral service at 11 AM at Hope United Church of Christ, 35127 Garfield Rd, Clinton Twp, MI 48035. Final resting place, Cadillac Memorial Gardens East in Clinton Township, Michigan.
