It's been years since you have passed away Grandma. I miss you so much every day. I wish I could have seen you one last time. I remember there are so many fond memories that I have with you from singing in the car, to going through crates of rocks, watching you put on your makeup in the morning, going down into the basement and looking at all the necklaces and any one that i loved you would let me have almost. Making chocolate pops and candy pops, and having ice cream before dinner. Playing on the organ and sitting in the front room with you. Going to see the kittens next door and of course going to yard sales :) You have always and will always hold a special place in my heart and  I think of you nearly every day. I picture you, Grandpa and Andy watching over me all the time. I miss you all so much. More than anyone ever really knows.

Monday is St. Paddy's Day Mom, so top of the mornin' to you a little early.  Maybe I'll play a couple Irish tunes in your honor.  How about "The Wearin' of the Green"?  I remember the great St. Patrick's Day parties we had complete with a rented hall, an Irish band and all our Shea relations.  It was fun to meet cousins we didn't know we had.  It's been a year since you've been gone.  We love you and miss you, but you and Dad live on in our memories, our families, our photographs, our hearts and, of course, in Heaven.  Until the time we're reunited with you in Heaven, so long.  Love, Dan

As is so often the case, we take those we love for granted until they are gone.  I find myself missing mom more and more as time passes.  I think of her often--how hard it must have been to deliver me and care for me by herself until dad returned from the army when I was over one year old; how she babysat for our kids whenever we needed it; the curtains and Halloween costumes she so expertly sewed.  I have followed some of her wonderful ideas like making life story books for each of her kids and doing one on one "grandma days" for each of the grandchildren.  Some of my best early memories were of mom playing 40s music and singing her great songs before we ever had a TV.  I loved her cooking and the parties that were almost always at our house.  Music and card games were always part of the family gatherings.  Mom lived a long and full life and was ready to meet her Maker--she loved God and taught us to love Him also.

When I look at the photos of my Mom on this website I see the meaning of the song "When Irish Eyes are Smiling."  I've never met anyone with a happier smile than my Mom.  And it was contagious.  She made all of us happier too.  She and my Dad were the anchors of our family.  We were at our happiest when we were with them.  Today is St. Patrick's Day.  My Mom always made sure I was wearing green on St. Patrick's Day.  So I wore my green blazer and green tie at her funeral and again to church today.  Happy St. Patrick's Day Mom.  I love you.

I remember once when Mom asked you if you were 'born in a barn' Dan - you're response was:  "if it was good enough for Jesus, it's good enough for me!"  I thought she'd boil over, but she started cracking up.  Here's another:  "Jesus, Mary and Joseph!. . . . "

Things my Mom said when we were growing up.  Sound familiar?  Remember any others?

If everyone jumped off a cliff would you do it too?
Because I'm your mother, that's why.
Because I said so.
If I've told you once I've told you a thousand times.
If you fall out of that tree and break a leg don't come running to me.
No dessert until you clean your plate.
If I have to stop this car you'll be sorry.
Just wait till your father gets home.
How hard you try is more important than what you do.
Wait until you have kids of your own.  Then you'll understand.
Eat your dinner.  Some kid in China would give his right arm for that food.
Don't chew with your mouth open.
Don't talk with your mouth full.
Don't cross your eyes.  They may stay that way.
I'm not everyone else's mother, I'm your mother.
I don't care what everyone else is doing.  I care what you're doing.
Don't use that tone with me.
As long as you live under my roof you'll listen to my rules.
What do I look like, your maid?
Don't sit so close to the TV.  You'll ruin your eyes.
Close the door behind you.  Were you born in a barn?
Put on clean underwear.  You never know if you'll be in an accident.
I'm not talking just to hear myself talk.
I'm going to give you to the count of three.

WHAT KIND OF PERSON WAS MY MOM

She was the kind of person who would give anyone she knew the shirt off her back if she thought they needed it.  She was the most generous person and had the biggest heart of anyone I've ever known.

She was the kind of person who loved people and they loved her.  She made friends very easily wherever she went.  St. George, Sunrise.  They all loved her and she loved them.

She was a positive, upbeat person who tried to see the bright side in everything.

She was a person of great wisdom and intelligence, right up to the end.
She was a person who worried about people.  She always wanted to make sure that everyone was taken care of.  She worried more about others than she did about herself.

She was the type of person who would want you to celebrate her life rather than mourn her death.  She'd rather that you have a party in her honor than a sad memorial service.  She'd want you to have a good time and be happy rather than sad on her account.  That's why we played Irish Rovers music at her funeral luncheon.

She was a person who had her priorities straight â€“ God, then family, then everything else.

She didn't care about money or material things.  She couldn't care less what kind of car you drove or what kind of house you lived in.  She cared about what kind of person you were.  She would have done fine with the vow of poverty in the convent.  She probably would not have done so well with the vow of obedience.

She was honest.  She would tell you what she thought whether you wanted to hear it or not.

She was feisty.  She could tell a person off if they needed it, regardless of their position or profession.

She was a fighter.  She fought off death several times and bounced back.  She said her name was part cat so that must be why she's had so many lives.

She was a wonderful, unique person and we'll all miss her very much.

Nancy, I am so sorry to hear of your moms passing.  She was a great lady...still remember girl scouts! Judging by all those wonderful pictures, she lived a beautiful and full life.  God bless.

Thank you everyone for your prayers and support during my Mom's recent illness and subsequent passing.  We're confident that she is at peace now - sipping tea with her sisters, and together again with her husband in heaven.  Nancy

I have so many wonderful memories of Grandma Wiegand.  As a child, I remember picking raspberries from Grandma and Grandpa's garden, Grandma's strong "bear hugs", playing the organ with Grandma, Grandma's delicious roast beef dinners, Labor Day Peach Festival and the bbq that followed at Grandma and Grandpa's house, venturing out to the rock garden, and finding our way through the corn stalks.  

As an adult, I have so many warm memories of Grandma.  I enjoyed hearing all of her stories from when she was growing up and raising her children.  She was the best story teller.  I loved her spririt.  She was always so kind and positive.  She was such a great role model for how to live life to the fullest.  She never complained - even in her final hours.  I am so grateful that Grandma got to meet our son Andrew, her latest great grand child.  She loved him so much.  She really enjoyed our visits with Andrew.  She would cover him with kisses.  And he would smile.  

I will miss Grandma very much.  However, it is comforting to know that she is in heaven with Grandpa.  I picture them dancing and celebrating her homecoming.  I know she is happy and free of pain.  Maybe she is playing the organ and singing folk songs.  I know she wouldn't want us to be sad.  She would want us to celebrate her life and share stories, just as she would have.
