Joanne M. Gall, 86, of Roseville, MI, physically left this world with her loving family at her side on December 16th, 2024. Joanne was born on October 24th, 1938, in Detroit, MI. She is predeceased by her husband, Thomas, and her parents, James and Virginia Ryan, as well as her sister, Suzanne Goddeeris. Joanne attended Saint David’s High School in Detroit and worked as a medical assistant prior to engaging in her spiritual calling as a wife, mother, and grandmother.
We called her “Mom,” but to all, she was loving, bright, witty, beautiful, compassionate, giving, strong, and brave. This wonderful daughter, sister, wife, devoted mother and loving grandmother, personified the family matriarch and Solomon’s description of “A wife of noble character” in Proverbs 31: 10-31.
Joanne organized her family’s efforts in confronting her husband’s recent battle with cancer and never wavered in her vigilance of his medical matters. She was a devoted mother who protected our childhood by ensuring, somehow, there were Christmas presents to be opened, food on the table, participation in sports and Scouts, as well as trips to the Michigan State Fair, Metro Beach, and the Bell Isle Zoo, despite some lean economic years. She instilled in her children an appreciation of family, and the importance of gratitude and humility, whether it was enjoying a hot fudge sundae at Sander’s or a grape Popsicle in the backyard in July; virtually, all her children’s fond childhood memories are the result of her selflessness. She truly epitomized the virtue of motherhood, by providing the safe harbor for her children to grow while fostering the confidence in them to leave the metaphoric harbor and live their lives.
A woman of deep faith, Joanne was a longtime, active member of Holy Innocents Catholic Parish in Roseville. She believed in the virtues of a spiritually based education and worked hard to ensure that all her children received 12 years of Catholic education. Joanne enjoyed her Bunco parties and the meticulous preparation whenever it was her turn to host the event. These parties, as Linda Beggs will attest, were truly a grand time. Her daughter’s say Joanne’s favorite adult beverage, enjoyed with her two favorite ladies, was a strawberry daiquiri from Shores Inn. They also attest her deep fondness of Hallmark Christmas movies “because they always have a happy ending.” Joanne loved her Detroit Tigers and was able to finally enjoy a game with her family at the ballpark this past year. The photos and memories from that wonderful event will be cherished forever. She also loved her J. L. Hudson’s, Coca-Cola, her mother’s roses, and Sanders Hot Fudge, which were always best when shared with family and friends. Additionally, Joanne will be remembered as a woman devoted to her family, instilling the virtues of duty, hard work, honor, faith, compassion, and integrity in her children, with these values being passed on to succeeding generations. Her loving presence will be missed by her children. She was the glue that kept the family together. She loved being a grandmother and embodied the loving “grandma” by always ensuring the grandchild had a freezer full of ice cream treats and Easter baskets to open, regardless of their age. The true testament to Joanne’s’ lasting legacy was evidenced over the last year, despite her health complications, and unrelenting physical pain, she continued to place family first and focused on the needs of her family and others, as if a continuous call to action. The family that she guided remains strong and united, honoring her by ensuring that spirit never ceases. Just because a person dies does not mean the relationship ends.
Joanne is survived by her children and their families: James Gall (Holly), Gerald Gall, Terri Slabaugh (Brian), Andrew Gall (Susan), Tracy DeLamielleure (Terry) and Thomas Gall, Jr. (Rachel). She is also survived by her grandchildren: Ryan (Carly), Alex, Courtney, Ethan, Noah, Maddy, Alyssa, Samantha, Michael, Cory, Chelsea (Miles), Chase (Anna), Chloe, Sophie, Gage, as well as her “bonus” grandchildren: Terry Jr., Tracy, Tammy, Addy, and Nicholas.
