Donald Smith, 89, of Clinton, passed away Thursday, May 22, 2014 at Yale-New Haven Hospital after a brief illness. He was born July 18, 1924 in Waterbury to the late Charles and Celia (Griffin) Smith. He is also preceded in death by loving wife of 65 years, Margaret (Sis) Smith, son William Smith, and sister Jane Goodale. Donald is survived by sons Peter Smith and his wife Nancy (Stevenson) of NJ, and James Smith and his wife Claire Levesque of Meriden. Donald is also survived by seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
A World War II veteran, Donald served in the Naval Air Corps from 1943 to 1946. He was employed as an Office Manager at Valley Oil for over 35 years until his retirement in 1990. He had a great love of the water, taking many family vacations to the Outer Banks in North Carolina, and wintering in Siesta Key, FL during his retirement years. While residing in Clinton he enjoyed his home near the water, fishing, lobstering, and spending time with the family and friends on his boat. Donald and his wife Sis also enjoyed traveling throughout the United States, including memorable trips to Alaska and Hawaii.
