It is with great joy that we memorialize the life of James "Jim" DelVecchio after his passing on Tuesday, April 21st, 2020, aged 84 years, at his home in North Ridgeville surrounded by his loving family.
Born and raised in Cleveland, Jim lived life loudly and without a filter. He was the loving brother of Peter and the son of Adelaide and Peter (both Deceased). The highlight of his life was marrying his wife Barbara, who put up with him for over 60 years. They spent over 50 years raising their family at their home on Carsten Lane in North Olmsted. After proudly graduating from Ohio University in 1958, Jim began his teaching career at his alma mater, West High School. He became the school's Athletic Director in 1965 before taking on the same role at West Tech in 1969. Outside of the classroom, he was an animated high school and college basketball referee, who also passionately coached baseball and football programs.
Despite his community involvement, Jim's top priority remained his family. He was proud of the family he built, and even prouder of each and every family member. Together, Jim and Barb welcomed five children into this world: Sharon (Steve Ziska), Jim (Marcy), Connie Stoll (Craig), John (deceased), and Diana Sopko (Mike). He adored his nine grandchildren, affectionately referring to him as "Papa", Jonathan (Kayla), Emma (Zack), Madeline, Thomas, Alyssa, Henry, Frankie, Annie, and Charlie, and his two great-grandchildren, Hailey and Natalie.
Jim had a strong personality with a lot of love to give. His purpose in life was centered around helping, shaping, and caring for others, throwing his whole self into everything he did. Best described, "You knew when you met him - no matter your opinion - you would never forget him."
On the day of his passing and in his honor, the North Ridgeville Utilities Department facilitated proper rubbish collection, while Pioneer Ridge's landscaping company ensured immaculate lawn mowing. In memory of Jim, toast a glass of wine and share your favorite story with your loved ones to preserve his legacy.
