He was an active trustee at the Western Reserve Historical Society, President of The Contemporary Art Society at the Cleveland Museum of Art, and Intermuseum Conservation Association, Apollo’s Fire, the Ohio Chamber Orchestra, the Cleveland Chamber Music Society, The Cleveland Institute of Music, Chamberfest, and Pianofest. He lectured in the United States and in Europe about literature, rare books and travel, his own book collection, and law-related topics. He graduated from the University of Illinois and earned his doctorate in jurisprudence at Case Western Reserve University. He chaired the Special Collection Committee at Oberlin College from 1987-1993.
His rare book collecting interests ranged widely and included Victorian literature, Charles Dickens, English and American nineteenth and Twentieth century authors, including Rockwell Kent, Eugene O'Neill, and William Burroughs, as well as early color plate collections and books first issued in parts. Sharing widespread interests including world-wide travel with his wife Donna they actively collected Southeast
Asian manuscripts and Oceanic and African Tribal Arts.
In 2020, The Kelvin Smith Library at Case Western Reserve University oversaw the establishment of the Robert H. and Donna L.
