She was born on August 19, 1921 to the late James Robert Holbrook and Mattie Pearl Gibson Holbrook in Franklin, North Carolina. Vennie loved Franklin, especially the Cowee Valley Community. She was very fond of trips to her childhood home in Macon County.
Vennie retired from RJ Reynolds after over 35 years working in production and as a tour guide. She was a devout member of College Park Baptist Church, joining their congregation in 1951. She truly valued the friendships and fellowship she shared with other members of the church’s senior adult group.
A great passion of hers was tending to her beautiful flowers and bountiful vegetable garden. When the gardening gloves were off, she could be found by her sewing machine working on her exceptional seamstress skills and making quilts for family and friends. Each one was made by hand and with love. Vennie was an accomplished cook; everyone will especially miss her chicken and dumplings, chocolate chip cookies, and pound cake. Sundays and holidays, family and friends gathered around the dinner table to partake of a lovingly prepared meal and lively conversation.
Vennie is preceded in death by her husband, John B. Davis, and nine brothers and sisters. She leaves behind her children, Wayne (Evangeline) Davis of Kernersville and Betsy (Hunt) Chapman of Arlington, VA; grandchildren, Kelli Davis (Chad) Harris of Cary, Kara Davis of Belmont, Jonathan Chapman of Las Vegas, and Brian Chapman of Arlington, VA; great grandchildren, Trey, Connor, and Davis Harris of Cary and Christopher and Madeleine Chapman of Arlington, VA; and many nieces, nephews, and loved ones.
The funeral service will be held on Sunday, April 29th at 2pm at College Park Baptist Church, 1701 Polo Rd, with Pastor Ramon Smith officiating. The family will receive friends for a visitation one hour prior to the service. Frank Vogler & Sons Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to her church, College Park Baptist, 1701 Polo Rd, Winston Salem, NC 27106.
