Winston-Salem—As dawn broke on the Lord’s Day, Patricia Burton Stewart, 61, shed her earthly body to join her Lord and Savior. No longer quietly enduring constant pain, countless, medical treatments and visits to doctors/nurses, who quickly became friends. Her immediate family (Jack, Teresa and ‘special Angie’) by her side, after a week of ‘holding court’ at the WS Hospice Home… God called her home and we know she is rejoicing at the wonder and magnitude of this Heaven she has heard about since she was a little girl at Salem Baptist School. Just as HE says he will never leave us or forsake us (Heb 13:5). This is a temporary separation… We all can be reunited again. She will be remembered and loved, always.
Born June 4, 1951 to the late Ralph and Evelyn Burton, Pat was the baby girl in a family of 4 boys. She married Jackson G. Stewart Sept. 30, 1973… a love story that continued during their almost 40 years of marriage. She leaves to remember her and pass on the stories: her loving husband, Jack; and devoted daughter, Teresa D. Stewart; brothers, Ralph (Betty) of Summerville, SC, Gray (Joanne) of Hamptonville, Jimmie (Gail), Don, predeceased her in 2007 (Ann); Kathryn Whitworth, her chosen family member and special lady predeceased her. She adored her nieces, Kim B. Goides and Karsen, Tammie Burton, Theresa Burton and Emily, Sandra Burton, Jessica Burton and Kenley; her nephews, Ty Burton and Austin, Gray Burton, Richard Burton, Chance and Dillion, Brad, Billy, Adam and Scotty Burton, Brennen Jakeway, Nicholas Goides; one precious granddaughter, Emily Stewart, who was the apple of her eye. She leaves many cousins and their spouses and children, and other extended family whom she always cared about. Never meeting a stranger,Pat had some special friends she wanted to thank for their love and support-Angie, her cousin Marty’s daughter, who has become like one of her own, Susie Burton, Eva Hammaker, Larry and Myra Galentine, Dr. Gibbs, his office and all the girls at Salem Gastroenterology. She never tired of making little treats and candies for everyone… celebrating everything (life). You didn’t have a birthday unless you had an ‘Aunt Pat’ cake! She put real meaning in ‘hands to work, hearts to God’- she was quiet in her faith but devout and knew her gift was through cooking; a talent she learned from her mother, and ‘seems’ to have passed down to her daughter…
After leaving her office job, she developed her passion into a business with “Tricia’s Sweets.” She was our ‘cake lady’ and resident caterer- having only within the past two years stopped making cakes for sale, but still insisting on making family birthday cakes.
A regular at the G’boro Farmer’s Market and a collector of recipes- ALL knew they were welcome at her table any day of the week.
Pat could be trusted with your innermost thoughts and she cared… she would call and inquire how ‘you’ were- even after she’d just spent 6 hours getting chemo treatment! That’s love in action. We should all take a lesson. Rest in peace dear Sister in Love… Let’s all wear purple and rejoice WITH her!
A funeral service will be held on January 24, 2013, 11:00 am, at Vogler and Sons Reynolda Chapel. The family will receive friends, 10:00-11:00 am, prior to the funeral service.
