She was born on May 16, 1931 in Beaufort, NC to Neva and Frank Roland Bell. Neva graduated from Salem College in 1953. She enjoyed spending time in Old Salem, where she worked as a Tour Guide and at Winkler’s Baker. In her spare time, Neva enjoyed traveling, flower gardening, and reading.
Neva spent a lot of time helping others. She loved volunteering. Neva spent volunteer time with Meals on Wheels, but spent most of her time volunteering at Forsyth Medical Center where she volunteered 2,000 hours over 31 years of her life working to deliver mail to patient’ room and as a greeter at the front desk. She warmly welcomed people with her beautiful smile. She also later volunteered for Family Services to call shut-in clients weekly even though she was wheel-chair bound herself.
She was a long time member of First Presbyterian Church. Neva served her church as a deacon, a member of the choir, a library assistant, and a historian for the women of the church.
Neva is survived by her loving husband of 61 years, Eugene W Barnhardt; her children, Elizabeth Ray, Becky (Louis) Brown, and Wilson Barnhardt; her grandchildren, William (Nancy) Ray, Jessica Ray, John (Samantha) Ray, Gordon (Jessica) Brown, David (Danae) Brown, and Caleb Brown; great-granddaughter, Milly Elizabeth Ray; sister, Frances (Daniel) Krauthiem; and many nieces, nephews, and loved ones.
