Conway, SC- Gilmer Robert “Bobby” Griffin, Jr., 70, formerly of Winston-Salem and Kernersville, NC, died in Conway, SC on December 8, 2011. Funeral services will be held on Monday, December 12, 2011 at 12:45 PM at Frank Vogler and Sons Reynolda Road Chapel with Dr. Robert Decker officiating. Interment will take place at Eastlawn Gardens of Memory in Kernersville. The family will greet guests beginning at 11 AM prior to the service.
Mr. Griffin was born in Forsyth County to the late Gilmer Robert and Eula Hauser Griffin, Sr. He served in the US Army during the Korean War. Mr. Griffin was employed by United Van Lines and North American Van Lines for many years before working with his son at Coastal Commercial Roofing. While employed with the trucking companies he was awarded Hauler of the Year in 1986 and 1987 and 1,000,000 miles accident free.
Since Bobby spent so much time away from home as a trucker when he was home his family was his top priority. He will be cherished and missed especially by his daughter-in-law Kim as he was her support and “back-up” with the grandchildren. He will be remembered as an honest, generous and dependable person and an all around “Mr. Fix-it.” He was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather.
Surviving include Shirley Carmichael Griffin, his wife of forty years; sons and their wives, Gregory Robert (Debbie) Griffin of Walnut Cove and David Taylor (Kim) Griffin of Conway; grandchildren, Ashley Dawn Griffin of Kernersville, Geoffrey Randall Griffin of Walnut Cove, Dylan Taylor Griffin of Conway and Caden Luke Griffin of Conway; great grandson, Quinton Gabriel Hood of Kernersville; brother Wayne (Marilyn)Griffin of Kernersville; sisters, Carolyn (Larry) Badgett of Kernersville and Betty Jane Smith of Henderson; brothers-in-law, Bobby (Mary Jane) Carmichael or Rockwood, TN and Charles Chester (Virginia) Taylor of MI; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Bobby was preceded in death by his brother Stephen Griffin.
