David Stone Smith

David Stone Smith, age 85, of Elkin passed away Sunday, November 27, 2022, at Forsyth Memorial Hospital surrounded by his family. David was born January 11, 1937, to Joseph Arl And Florence Burcham Smith.

David loved his family beyond measure. He married Joyce Nichols Smith, April 4, 1958. They were married 46 years before her passing. He enjoyed evenings together with his family, sharing dinner with them and rides to any destination, near or far. He was always up for the trip and ready to go. He loved animals and worked with them throughout his life even training bird dogs as a young boy. Recently, it thrilled him to see a new born foal appear on the farm and he would keep a watchful eye on them. David enjoyed playing cards. He was an avid poker player but enjoyed many other card games.

David spent his life in the telephone industry. Early in his career, David built central offices and was a lineman. He was very knowledgeable in installation and telephone repair. He was quite handy at any task. He was a plumber, electrician, and a mechanic. He truly was a Jack of all trades.

David was preceded in death by his wife, Joyce Nichols Smith. Sisters Marie Southard and Margaret Dimmette, and brothers James Smith, John Smith, Joe Smith, and Bobby Smith.

David is survived by his daughter, Lisa Whisenhunt and husband, Doug. Granddaughter, Hannah Smith(Justin), grandson, Dillon Whisenhunt(Kenley) and special furry companion, Heidi. He is also survived by his sisters, Arlene Johnson (David), Judy Wiles (Dale) and many nieces and nephews. David loved all of his family and enjoyed talking to his sisters daily before his illness.

David’s family wishes to thank the First Floor Intermediate Critical Care Unit. David spent much time there and was treated with care and compassion.

To be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord.

A visitation for David will be held Thursday, December 1, 2022 at 6:00 PM at Frank Vogler & Sons, 2849 Middlebrook Dr, Clemmons, North Carolina 27012. A graveside service will occur Friday, December 2, 2022 at 1:00 PM at Little Vine Primitive Baptist Cemetery, Dobson, NC.
