John graduated from Florida A&M University in Tallahassee with his Bachelor's Degree, and Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan with an MSW. John worked in the Veterans Administration for over twenty-eight years. He was Regional Manager, Southeast Region 3 for Readjustment Counseling Service (51 Vet Centers in six states and two US territories P.R. and Virgin Islands) retiring in 2010.
He served in the US Army from 1967 to 1970, where he served in Vietnam from 1968 to 1969 with the Company D, 1st Battalion, 5th Cavalry, 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile).
John was called to the Gospel Ministry in October 1982. He went to Tampa Bay Theological Seminary in Tampa and received his MACE degree from Dallas Theological Seminary in Dallas, Texas in 2004. He began preaching at New Way Fellowship Baptist Church in Miami Florida in 1982. He was ordained in 1990 by Faith Memorial Baptist Church, St. Petersburg, Florida. From June 1990 to October 2014 he was the Minister of Christian Education, Faith Memorial Baptist Church, in St. Petersburg, Florida. John was also Associate Minister for various Baptist Churches in St. Petersburg and Miami, Florida. At the time of his passing he was an Associate Minister at Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church in Safety Harbor, Florida.
John is survived by his loving wife of 36 years, Cynthia Taylor Walker, of Palm Harbor, Florida; two daughters, Nichole Garner and Natalie Walker,three grandchildren, Cameron, Trevon and Courtney Garner and a great grandson Ollie Garner all of Houston, Texas; 4 Sister-In-Laws and 4 Brother-In-Laws. John was also survived by a devoted cousin, Doris Pickens, of Cleveland, Ohio and many friends and relatives who will miss him dearly.
A memorial service will be held at 2pm Friday, April 14th at Sylvan Abbey Funeral Home, 2853 Sunset Point Road, Clearwater, Florida 33759. A celebration of his life gathering will follow at the funeral home from 3pm-5pm.
