Met George in 1980 as our wives (Judi & Alice) were best friends, When thinking of George I am reminded of JFK's words "what can you do for your Country".  From protecting as a Marine to serving as a role model in Big Brothers.  
He was a true friend to all that met him and wanted to be his friend.  He always saw the good in other people & always had a kind word to say. Always encouraging others to be the best they can be.  
I treasure the memories we made together,. Dinners, lunches, golfing,  cards, mystery trips & just taking off and see what the day would bring.  There will always be a warm spot in my heart for George.
By treating others like he wanted to be treated - I know there is a soft spot in God's Heart as well.
   


George was my ‘baby’ brother and although we didn’t see a lot of each other the past few years we knew we could always count on being there for each other if needed. We grew up “Army Brats” and lived all over the place before settling in Largo. There so many stories I could share about George – his love of food, his love of sailing, his love of poker, his love of country and his great curiosity about almost everything; always advancing his knowledge.  One thing many of you may not know is after Marine boot-camp George was given a special assignment in D.C. of escorting President Johnson’s daughters to special events [he looked so good in that uniform!]. During that timeframe our Dad, who had served and was a POW in WWII and also served in Korea was called back to duty to be sent to Viet Nam. Unbeknownst to him George requested he be sent to Viet Nam instead of Dad, and his request was approved.  Daddy was mad but proud of George. We all were. I just want everyone to know George fought a very brave battle since he had a heart attack on April 13, 2019. He survived the heart attack but due to the meds they had to give him, he wound up having to have some amputation done on his legs. He wanted desperately to begin therapy with his prosthesis so he could go back home to his wife/his life but, after 7 long months and several set-backs, he gave up his battle.  We know George is with our families angels who went before him, and is looking down with love on all of us now – we love & miss you George!

I met George in 1974 just after I had moved to Florida.  We became friends almost on sight.  The memories of our times together will never leave me, and obviously many of those memories include you.  What good times we had on sailboats (passing wind, LOL ) and endless great conversations.  He is one of my five (If you can count five friends in your life, you are very very lucky) and I intend to meet up with him on the other side.  

I am so sorry for your loss, and sorry for Judi's and for mine.  I cannot express how much I loved that big Marine and my sorrow at his passing. He was a great friend for all these years and I know he fought the good fight.  I will miss him until the end of my days. The only thing I can ask to express or even come close to how much I loved him is to play a song at his service. Please, if you can, in honor of him, please have this song played from Joe to George:  Go rest high on that mountain, by Vince Gill.

George was a wonderfully caring classmate.  We sang together in Madrigals at LHS.  What a beautiful voice.  He will be missed with fond memories of making beautiful music with his friends.

Our sincerest condolences to the Steffens family for the loss of your loved one. George, will always be remembered as a Loyal Parker Teammate and friend. He is a dear Marine brother who is now guarding the gate of Heaven R.I.P George. God has you in his hands
