Bobbie was born in Alexandria, VA, on March 22, 1920, the eldest of the three children of Arthur and Elsie Embrey Utterback. She was raised in the District of Columbia, where she graduated from Central High School and then went on to complete her nursing training at Garfield Hospital School of Nursing in 1941. In June, 1942, she married Edmund Purdy, a U.S. Army officer candidate. During the Second World War, Bobbie accompanied Ed to his stateside duty stations, performing volunteer nursing service wherever he was posted. After the war, Bobbie and Ed returned to the Philadelphia, PA, area, where she took time to a family. She was also involved in numerous charitable and artistic organizations. Once her sons were of school age, she returned to her nursing career as an Industrial Nurse, a vocation she would pursue for more than twenty years. She and Ed moved to Dunedin, FL, from Ambler, PA, in 1977, and she continued to work as a nurse for several more years before finally retiring. They were married for 61 years until Ed's death in 2003. Bobbie is survived by two sons: Edmund J. Purdy (Jane) of Mebane, NC, and David E. Purdy (Carol) of Pearland, TX; two grandsons and a granddaughter; more than a dozen nieces and nephews, and more than two dozen grandnieces, grandnephews, great-grandnieces and great-grandnephews. She will be missed by every one of them. Her ashes were placed next to her beloved husband Ed at Sylvan Abbey.
