Allen was a 3rd generation Floridian born in McIntosh Florida on November 12th, 1928 to Ada Godwin and William Lamb Kelly. He was raised in Ehren, Pasco County and moved from Tampa to Clearwater in 1976.
Allen joined the Merchant Marines as a sailor in 1944 after one semester at University of Florida at the end of World War II. He transported war supplies, then troops back home. Allen spent 40 years in the Merchant Marines, interrupted ten years into his career when he was drafted into the Army for two years during the Korean War. During the Vietnam War, Allen's freighter ships carried supplies and ammunition for our troops. He retired as Captain after 25 years with Lykes Steam Ship Company. Allen enjoyed sharing many colorful stories of his years at sea. He would begin with, "Did I ever tell you about the time..." During his long life he visited all continents except Australia. He met his wife Ngaire, who is from New Zealand, when she was travelling as a passenger on one of his ships from New York to South Africa.
Allen was preceded in death by his sisters Jean Horne, Margie Stafford and his son Sean. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Ngaire, son Mark (Hien) Kelly, daughter Lisa (Brian McMahon) Kelly, grandchildren Lucy and James Fuller, Sean Patrick Kelly and numerous nieces and nephews.
