We met Joan  playing golf with the girls at the Groves. 
We met Al a little later. He was wonderful, charming, funny, and a very good host.

A few years ago, we met Al and Joan in London, along with Sue and Barrie Mayes,and we found a place to take them that they had not been before.  A tour of Buckingham Palace. As we had booked a wheelchair, to save Al from too much walking, we missed the long queues, and went in through a different gate.The Palace staff looked after us very well and we all had a wonderful day. 
The following day we all went on the London Eye,  a  ferris wheel. with great views of the city, the river and the parks. 
Joan and Al  wanted to go on the top deck of a London double-decker bus, it was challenging, but we did it !

More recently, Al and Joan  landed at Gatwick airport for a cruise from Southampton, so we stayed in Brighton for a couple of days as Joan's family were from  that area.
We wandered through 'the lanes' which are full of antique / junk shops, depending on the cost, and cafes where we had Afternoon Tea.
 The next day we toured the Brighton Pavillion and saw a show in the evening. It took half of the show before they could understand the accent.

For many years, Joan and Al have taken us to and from the airport.  They have been the first friends to greet us, and the last to say goodbye.
It's going to be very sad this year without Al.


Al was one of the last living soldiers from WWII. He was honored in numerous parades - in Tampa as well as in Washington, DC. 
His club also celebrated his service to the country with this display in 2018. Many of you will remember the mountain in the background - where was it ?
When you look as good as he did and at the same time you can make the ladies laugh, you have it made - with 19 and with 90.
Al, we know you will keep on doing your thing where ever you are now. Have a safe journey.

We met Al & Joan one Tuesday night in 2010 at Caliente trivia, we had just moved from MA into our condo at Paradise Lakes after retiring, There was not a lot going on at Paradise on Tuesday nights so we decided to try trivia. We did not know anybody there but Al & Joan invited us to sit at  their table. They made us feel very welcomed & introduced us to so many great people that we are friends with today. Will always remember the fun trips to Busch Gardens, the Halloween Parties. the New Years Parties, the dinners together every Friday, the spontaneous dinners at other times & Tuesday trivia. Al was a very special person, the kind you only meet once in a lifetime, if you were having a bad day he could make you forget about it. He always had a smile & a warm greeting for you every time he saw you. If you had a problem no matter what he would be the first to offer help. His speeches are legendary, just ask anybody that has heard one. Al, you may be gone but you will always be remembered by everyone who called you a friend.

Al's smile, gentle touch, concern and words made each person who knew him feel like they were special.  He was the special one!

First of all we have to say that it is almost impossible for us to have memories about only Al - it was always the whole team, Joanie and Al. Does anybody ever remember one being without the other ? 
We met them at the club where we had bought a vacation condo.  At that time we still lived in Germany and always came in May and in October. We'd sit in the pool and just listen to the funniest team apart from George Burns and Gracie Allen.  Stefan being German and therefore not very familiar with the New York way of talking, just could not get enough of the way they talked (to each other). We had watched the TV show The Nanny and that was just like having parts of the show right there in the pool. We slowly started to join the conversations. Then, in 2002, we could not make it in time to prepare our usual wedding anniversary on May 7th(the 20th that year) in Florida because of our work schedules.  We would get to Florida on the 6th, late night.  Joanie and Al knew about this and some days before we would take off we received an email that they had prepared their clubhouse, yes the same clubhouse were we all had Al's repast, for our anniversary.  A preacher, all our friends, music, food, all the works we were absolutely overwhelmed.  Al made one of his FAMOUS speeches which made you laugh and cry at the same time.
How can you ever forget such a deed,  from that moment on they became our dearest friends, actually our Florida mom and dad. We went to Baseball games, shared dinner on the holidays, went to the Straz and and and... We were family !
Stefan was especially thankful because him being a German he felt so lucky having a Jewish family. He always admired the way Al would get out his money clip and pay at restaurants in a most elegant way. He thought it was mega cool. Al must have noticed this and 2 weeks before he passed he gave the clip to Brenda. That clip will always be with Stefan-until he can return it in another place.
Al, we miss you, you cannot be replaced !


When I first moved to Florida in the early 1990's, I knew no one, but I met Al at the pool and he was quick to introduce me to soo many people.  
He always  greeted everyone (especially the ladies) with a warm smile and a funny joke .   Joan and Al made my daughter and me feel very welcome in the community.

One of my favorite memories was when a group of us were in the Bahamas and Al wandered off while some of us were shopping.  Joan went into the stores and yelled "Albert!" (and you know how soft Joan's voice is).  After searching for him for about an hour, we gave up and continued to the restaurant where we were meeting for lunch.  There sat Al, relaxing in a chair, sipping on a cool beverage.  When questioned about his wandering off......his reply was....he knew where he was, we were the ones who were lost!  You can't help but love him!

Al was such a fixture in the community, everyone knew and loved him.  Our memories of Al will always warm our hearts and make us smile.

We will miss you.
