Rev. Karen Louise (Nelson) Rhone, 65, of Clearfield, passed away Wednesday, January 10, 2024 at her home. Heaven has gained an amazing woman, daughter, mother, and grandmother. Her loving smile, kindness, and love of life were contagious.
Born October 13, 1958 in Clearfield, she was a daughter of the late Sherman L. Nelson and Janet S. (Sunderland) Nelson, who survives her.
Karen was a member of the Hyde Wesleyan Church and a 1976 graduate of Clearfield Area High School.
On June 4, 1977, she married Douglas W. Rhone, who became the love of her life. Together they raised three amazing children: Joshua, Zachary, and Caitlin. Both Karen and Doug were youth leaders before receiving a calling to become ordained pastors in The Wesleyan Church. She served at the Hyde and Coleville Wesleyan churches. In 2010 Karen and Doug were founding pastors of The Well, a Wesleyan Church in Philipsburg. They served there until 2016 when health problems forced her to cease active ministry.
Karen was vibrant and full of life! She loved watching her children and grandchildren play basketball and soccer and spent a number of seasons coaching youth soccer teams. She enjoyed going to the beach, gardening, going for walks and bike rides with her best friend, and spending time with her family as often as she could. She loved to laugh and be silly, and wasn’t one to take life too seriously. She was a passionate follower of Christ and enjoyed sharing the Gospel and love of God with as many people as possible. Many people are carrying a small wooden cross in their pocket or purse that Karen gave them as encouragement.
Karen is survived by her husband, Doug, of Clearfield; two amazing sons, Rev. Joshua (Crystal) Rhone of York, PA, and Zachary (Maria) Rhone of Marion, NC; a loving daughter, Caitlin (Nick) Colesar of Aliquippa, PA; along with the grandchildren she loved: Quinton Rhone, Madison Rhone, Callum Rhone, Asher Rhone, Michael Colesar, Alex Colesar, and Rachel Colesar.
Also surviving is a brother, Kim (Deborah) Nelson.
She was preceded in death by her father, Sherman Nelson.
Viewing will be Monday, January 15, 2024 from 2pm to 4pm, and 6pm to 8pm at the Bennett & Houser Funeral Home in Clearfield. A Funeral Service will be held Tuesday, January 16, 2024 at the Hyde Wesleyan Church, with Rev. Melody Weston officiating. Family and friends will be received at the church from 10am until the time of service at 11am.
Our daughter, wife, mom, and grandma will be greatly missed, but she is now reunited with her dad and enjoying the joys of an everlasting life.
In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made in Karen's Memory to The Asservo Project, PO Box 1352, Moon Township, PA 15108; or World Hope International, ATTN: Gift Processing, PO Box 743794, Atlanta, GA 30374-3794.
