Mr. Weiss was born on January 12, 1909 in Stockertown, PA, the son of Steward W. and Ellen (Steigerwalt) Weiss.
He graduated from Nazareth High School in 1927, Perkioman Prep School in 1928 and from Albright College in 1932 with B.S. degree. He was President of the student body during his senior year in college and junior year in college he was president of his class. In 1932 he began teaching biology and algebra in the Clearfield Area School District and he also worked part time for 20 years as a chemist with DvMunt Airplane and Marine.
He served as head coach for Jr. High Football for 3 years during WW II and coached basketball for 2 years before starting the Clearfield High School wrestling program in 1935. He served as head wrestling coach for 25 years retiring in 1959.
He was a member and Past President of the Kiwanis Club since the late 1940’s, a former member of the Clearfield Coral Society and a member of the Wrestling Coaches Association. He had served 17 years as Chief Scorer and Matchmaker for (EIWOA) Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Organization Association and was a member of the board for 17 years. He was listed in the National High School Hall of Fame as one of the winningest wrestling coaches. In 1978 he became one of the first two inductees’ into the Pennsylvania Wrestling Coaches Association Hall of Fame.
He had served as secretary for Sunday school and evangelical Church of Trinity United Methodist Church in Nazareth, PA. He was a member of the Clearfield Presbyterian Church in Clearfield for over 59 years. He taught Sunday school for numerous years and served as Past Superintendant of the Presbyterian Church Grade School. He also served as Deacon and Elder of the Clearfield Presbyterian Church and chairman of the organ committee, advisor to the youth fellowship and served as advisor for Mt. Top Presbyterian Churches.
Mr. Weiss is survived two granddaughters Lisa Weiss and Kathleen Nelson of MD, two great grandchildren Glenn Nelson and Nicole Nelson, two brothers: Victor Weiss of Athens, PA and John Weiss of Bethlehem, PA.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Irene M. (Reimer) Weiss whom he married December 28, 1936 and who passed away September 19, 2005, a son, Arthur J. Weiss, Jr. who passed away April 11, 2011, three brothers: George, Samuel and Robert Weiss and a sister, Mary Weiss.
A Memorial service will be held at 4:00 P.M. on Saturday, May 21, 2011 at the Clearfield Presbyterian Church with Rev. Robert Mellgard and Mr. Richard Barkley co-officiating. Interment will be in Hecktown Hope Cemetery, Nazareth, PA.
A reception and receiving of friends will follow the service in Westminister Hall.
