William Vincent “Bill” Chase passed away quietly on Saturday, March 2nd, 2013, at about 3pm. He had been in declining health and was in a skilled nursing facility in El Cajon, California, at the time of his passing. Bill was born March 22, 1945, in Baltimore, Maryland, and grew up and lived his life in Chula Vista, California. It was the life’s work of his Mother, Evelyn S. Chase, to teach Bill so he could have a full life. Late in his life, he lived in the home of Palmer and Madie Chase, who cared for him when Mother was no longer able. Bill was known for his happiness and friendliness, and had many friends at the LDS Church he attended and in the community. He loved the San Diego Zoo, Sea World, the beach, and traveling to visit family. Bill was one of the founding members of the Starlight Center in Chula Vista for those with mental handicaps. Mother and many friends and community members worked to make Starlight an exemplary program in the nation. Bill loved his music, his many stuffed animals, sports, and most of all his family. He taught much of kindness and compassion to his brothers, nieces, nephews, and other extended family. They in return were always kind and loving to him.
Bill attended the ARC of San Diego, Starlight Center for the developmentally disabled for most of his life. He worked in the workshop for many years as a young man and then participated in the senior program when he became 55. In 2011 he received the ARC San Diego Consumer of the Year award In Recognition of His Outstanding Performance and Exceptional Commitment.
Bill is survived by his two brothers and their wives, Palmer and Madie Chase, of Chula Vista, and Robert and Sharon Chase, of Kent, Washington, as well as numerous nephews, nieces, grandnephews, and grandnieces. We will miss Bill, but we are comforted in the knowledge that he is enjoying a wonderful reunion with his beloved Mother and other family members without the handicaps that limited him during his life.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, March 11, 2013, at Noon, in the Chula Vista LDS Chapel, at 790 Rancho Del Rey Pkwy, Chula Vista, CA 91910, followed by interment at the Glen Abbey Memorial Park & Mortuary, 3838 Bonita Road, Bonita, CA 91902.
