Mike Schaad passed away peacefully on Thursday, July 7, 2016 at 1:05 am after about 36 hours in Sharp Grossmont Hospital, La Mesa, California. He was surrounded by local family before passing and spoke to his four children out of state before becoming unresponsive. The condition of his heart was known to be fragile (he had recently been told to stop lifting weights), but he had been in relatively good health and spirits until Tuesday, when his condition suddenly worsened. On the morning of Tuesday, July 5, his wife Fran found him at their home in Santee, California lying on the bed in pain. He had been diagnosed with a heart condition known as a thoracic aortic aneurysm a few weeks earlier.
Mike was 77 and lived a full life. He was born Edward Michael Schaad in Santa Monica, California on September 7, 1938, the first child of Edward Melvin Schaad and Lorraine De Longpre. Growing up, he loved baseball and the beach. He left California and graduated in sociology with a minor in psychology from Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah. Returning to California, Mike got a job with San Diego County probation and worked there for 18 years, working a total of 35 years in law enforcement and security at various employers around San Diego.
Mike loved books, records, and movies. He loved to lift weights, hike at Zion National Park (and elsewhere in Utah and Arizona), and spend time with his children and grandchildren. Mike enjoyed sharing his knowledge and discussing ideas with his children and grandchildren. His family was always in his thoughts, and he regularly took his kids and grandkids to the park, read aloud to them, and colored in coloring books with them.
Mike was preceded in death by his parents, brother Randy, and brother Gary, who passed away only four months earlier. Mike is survived by his wife Frances Schaad of Santee, California; son Eric Schaad (Rachel) of Seattle; sons Aaron Schaad (Amanda) and Brian Schaad (Rachel) of Utah; daughter Holly Barnes (Jason) of Tennesee; brother Steve Schaad (Kathy) of Northridge, California; sister Susan Schaad of Oregon; and step-children Vanessa Clute, Jeneva Sprecco, Ron Close (Jill), and Heather Dixon (Danny)—all of San Diego County. His oldest sons, Jon and Chris Shuppy of Utah, from his first marriage, also survive him. Mike had 22 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.
A memorial will be held on September 7, 2016, beginning at 11:30am, at 1936 Quivira Way, Suite F (Dockside Room) San Diego, California, 92109. Lunch will be provided.
Arrangements under the direction of Funeraria Del Angel Humphrey, Chula Vista, CA.
