Ralph Mark Silva was born in Merced, California to David and Elvira Silva. Ralph passed away on December 6, 2024, at the age of 79, after three courageous battles with cancer, surrounded by his loved ones in Chowchilla, California.
Ralph graduated from Atwater High School in 1962 and went to Modesto Junior College. He became a manager at Shakey's Pizza in Modesto until he opened a Wienerschnitzel in Merced, which he ran for over 13 years. He then worked for Merced Junior College as a custodian until he retired in 2009.
Ralph’s greatest joy in life was the time he spent with family and friends. Many of these treasured moments unfolded on their beloved houseboat, “Empty Pockets,” where he and his beautiful wife, Nancy Jo—his best friend and partner in adventure—created lasting memories. If you knew Nancy and Ralph, you likely were involved in or heard tales of their summers on the houseboat, where, although their pockets might have been empty at times, their hearts were always full, and laughter echoed across the water.
Ralph was a master at making memories, whether it was gliding down snow-covered mountains while skiing, twirling on the dance floor during square dances, or cruising the open road with fellow Miata enthusiasts.
In addition to these adventures, Ralph enjoyed watching classic black-and-white films and listening to music. He had a deep appreciation for fishing and found peace in the simplicity of nature. His passion for woodworking was evident in the carefully crafted gifts he made for family and friends—treasures that will be cherished for years to come.
A compassionate and caring man, Ralph was always ready to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. His warmth and generosity touched the lives of many.
He will be profoundly missed by all who knew him.
Ralph is survived by his beloved wife of 48 years, Nancy Jo Silva; his daughters, Debbie Gaumnitz (Fred) and Denise Whitaker(Mike); his grandchildren and great grandchildren, Anissa McKenzie(Taylor & Mathew), Prentiss “PJ” Hedrington (Dante, Donavan, Quinn, Weston, & Mya), Frederick “Tanner” Gaumnitz (Renee, Conner, & Aleyna), Fritz “Cole” Gaumnitz (Corrie, Caleb, & Charlotte), Gregg McKenzie, Jessica Pent (Natalie, Alexandra, & Cameryn), Scott Gaumnitz (Megan & Ashlynn), and Michael Whitaker(Grace, Hadley, & Oakley).
He also leaves behind his sister Marion Silva along with his two nephews Marty and Rob Acree.
Ralph was preceded in death by his mother, Elvira Edwina Silva (Amaral), his father, David Edward Silva, and his brother, Dave Silva Jr.
A Celebration of Life for Ralph will be held Saturday, January 4, 2025, from 12:00 to 4:00 PM at the Italo American Lodge, 1351 W 18th Street, Merced, California.
