Phyllis Irene Gwartney (Bettes), of Chowchilla, CA passed away peacefully on December 15, 2022, surrounded by her family. Phyllis was born on July 23, 1940, in Madera to Morris Bettes and Myrtle Belle Pease.
Phyllis grew up in Madera before moving to Chowchilla, where she met her future husband, Edgar Gwartney. Ed and Phyllis were married on October 24, 1959, until his death on September 28, 2018. They raised three children.
Phyllis was a registered nurse who served the communities of both Merced and Madera counties during her career. She worked in many departments and capacities, caring for countless people. Her fondest memories, though, were from her time helping to deliver babies and working with new mothers.
Phyllis is survived by her brother, John Bettes of Redding, and her children, Kelly Hollman of Madera Ranchos, Jeff Gwartney of Atwater, and Chris Gwartney of Chowchilla, as well as by her twelve grandchildren, son and daughters-in-law, and many other loved ones.
Phyllis was preceded in death by her husband, Edgar Gwartney, her parents, Morris and Myrtle Bettes, and her brothers Jim Bettes and Larry Bettes.
A graveside service will be held on December 28, 2022, in the pavilion at the Chowchilla Cemetery, at 10:00 a.m.
