Mr. Joseph Harold Higgins, age 86 of China Grove, passed away on Tuesday, August 10, 2021 at Tucker Hospice House in Kannapolis after a period of declining health. Born April 25, 1935 in Madison County, Harold was the son of the late Ronald and Texie Higgins. He was a member of First United Methodist Church in China Grove.
Harold graduated from Mars Hill High School and went on to graduate from Western Carolina University with his education degree. He spent his career as an educator and coach beginning with Landis High School. He then went on the teach and coach at Corriher-Lipe Middle School, South Rowan High School, West Rowan High School, Catawba College and Central Cabarrus High School. Harold was the first coach to win both the men’s AND women’s basketball tournament of the Sam Moir Holiday Christmas Basketball Tournament.
In his retirement years, he enjoyed playing golf at the former Kannapolis Country Club. He was proud of his four hole-in-one trophies from his days playing at the Club. He enjoyed playing the piano and played by ear with never having a lesson. He had a tremendous love for his family.
Those left to cherish his memory are his daughter, Sandra “Sandy” Overcash along with his grandchildren, Sydney Overcash and Zach Overcash and his great-granddaughter, Phoenix.
Visitation for Harold will be on Saturday, August 14, 2021 from 1:00 – 2:00pm at Linn-Honeycutt Funeral Home in China Grove. Funeral Service will follow in the Chapel at 2:00pm officiated by Rev. William Van Wieren of First United Methodist Church. Committal Service at West Lawn Memorial Park will immediately follow.
