It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of May McGill on January 5th, 2022, at Glenwood Care Home in Agassiz, BC.
Born on January 26th, 1933, in Greenock, Scotland, she was the beloved youngest child of David and Mary Loraine and sister to Elizabeth Loraine.
After completing secondary school at the age of 15, May began working in the printing department of John G Kincaid Engineers, Boiler Makers and Co. at the shipyards in Greenock. Four months later she began her apprenticeship as a tracer and after serving three years as an apprentice she was retained as a journeywoman tracer until August 1955.
That month, August 1955, she married Charlie McGill, and two months later the newlyweds boarded the ship Neptunia in Southampton, England and sailed west to Quebec, Canada. Their first year was spent in Niagara Falls, Ontario, but the cold winters and hot summers were not their cup of tea and they packed up their wee trailer and headed west once again. They settled for awhile in Burnaby and lived in their trailer until their first child was born. In 1959 they bought some land and built a house in White Rock, BC, where their second child was born. The family grew and after living in the house for 13 years, they built their second home in South Surrey.
May raised 4 children and was a wonderful mother. She loved dogs. She enjoyed singing and performing and her and Charlie were members of the White Rock Choral Society in the 1960s and 1970s and performed in musicals. She sang in the church choir and taught Sunday school. She loved the ocean and travelling. In their retirement, her and Charlie were snowbirds for 15 years. Travelling to California for several months each year and spending the rest of their time at their home in Sechelt, BC. She loved Canada but her heart was always in Scotland, and she went home to Scotland as often as she could. She instilled in her children a love of Scotland by singing us Scottish songs, cooking us Scottish food like mince and tatties, and taking us to Scotland to connect with family. May’s faith in Christ anchored her life and she finished the race set before her with strength.
May was predeceased by her husband Charlie, her grandson Ryan W and grandson-in-law Michael R. She is survived by her children, Charles McGill (Olga), David McGill, Fiona Delcourt (Shaun), Moira Wegner (Perry). Her grandchildren Kayla D, Scott D, Ian D, Eric W, Davis W, Rina M, May M and her two great grandchildren Mason R and Violet R.
The family would like to thank the Nurses and Staff at Glenwood Care Home for providing compassionate care to May.
We will forever be grateful that she was our mum, and we will miss her with all our hearts.
Cheerio Mum.
