Helen was predeceased by her husband Abe Dick, March 20, 1987, her parents Jacob and Katherine Bergen, and sibling, Marion, Frank.

Life Information:

Helen was born near Riverhurst, Saskatchewan on July 15, 1930 to Jacob and Katherine Bergen. She was the 7th of 10 children. She never lacked for playmates. There were lots of moves for the family to northern Saskatchewan and eventually to Chilliwack, BC. She attended a one room school with many grades. It was a shock for her to come to Junior High School in Chilliwack with so many students and so many classrooms. Her parents gave in to her and let her remain home after grade 8. It was one of her life regrets that she did not finish high school. But she was a learner and all her life she loved words. She would do crosswords and play scrabble. She loved to read poems and stories. And often her guests would listen to her read or she would have them read for entertainment. She took a sewing class for a year – and always enjoyed sitting at her sewing machine creating new things.

She married Abram Dick, a neighbour down the road. They met at church and were good friends in Bible School. She thought him plain looking until he smiled. They were married on August 19, 1951. They lived in Chilliwack their whole married lives. Four children, 6 grandchildren and so far 5 great grandchildren came into her life.

On a sunny March evening in 1987, while riding their bikes, Abe’s life came to an end as a result of an accident. Now Helen needed to learn to live on her own. She struggled with depression and I am sure all of us wondered how she would cope. With God’s help, she did amazingly well. She continued to live on her 5 acres for another 24 years before she moved to a bungalow on Quarry Road. After 7 years she needed more care and lived at Cascade in Assisted Living for 5 months and then 16 months at the Bradley Center.

Mom passed away peacefully in her sleep on Friday morning, November 22, 2019. While it was not expected at the moment, it was still an answer to prayer that she could be released from her pain and from Parkinson’s Disease. She has found her place in heaven and I know she is singing praises to God.

As a family we are grateful for all the care mom received, even though I know she was not always the easiest person to look after. Thank you to her friends who visited her so faithfully. Thanks to the staff at Bradley – all of you – who cared for her.
