Virginia Carrie Gawel was born on August 2, 1935. She was the only daughter of Joseph and Katherine (nee Piatek) Kmiecik. She was born, and lived all her life in Chicago. She graduated from St. Joseph High School later marrying Edward Gawel on October 20, 1956.
Virginia took great pride in raising her five children and running the household. As her children grew older, Virginia worked at Sears for around 20 years customizing window treatments. Her hobbies included collecting Hallmark ornaments, white milk collectibles, and Lladro figurines.
Virginia was a loving wife to the late Edward for 65 years, dearest mother to Edward Jr. (Cheryl), Susan (the late Steve) Hepp, the late David (Vickie), James (Ashley), and Robert (Laura). She was the proud grandma to Laura, Ryan, Nicholas, Dana (Melissa), Haley, Jacob, Emilee, Luke, Brooke, and Kelsey; step-grandma to Shannon and Summer, and step-great grandma to Carlos and Jocelyn. Fond sister of the late Joseph (Dorothy) Kmiecik, the late Steven (Frances ‘Francie’) Kmiecik, and sister-in-law of Mary Jane ‘Mamie’ (the late Raymond) Sierzega, Jeanette ‘Jenny’ (the late George) Blessing, and the late Rosemary ‘Rosie’ (the late Edward) Kus. Virginia also was the fond aunt to many nieces and nephews including the late Steven Kmiecik and Karen (Kus) Provan.
The family would like to extend their gratitude to Tetyana for her great care given of our mother.
